Both John Ryan Hodges and his wife, Elizabeth Brown Hodges, were of English, Scotch, Irish de scent. Although their parents lived in Virginia, they undoubtedly came from England. (Ref: W . Edgar Martin of the Moorhead State Teachers College Faculty, Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1947 , was of English descent with numerous Hodges relatives in the area of London.) The Hodges li ved mainly in the area of Goochland County and near Richmond. John Ryan and Elizabeth Hodge s spent their early lives in Orange, Louisa , Albermarle, and Fluvanna counties. About 1835 t hey began to migrate westward. On October 31, 1846, they settled permanently in what is now U pshur County, West Virginia. The village in which they last lived was named in John R.'s hono r called Hodgesville. That village is approximately 6 miles north of Buckhannon and is the co unty seat of Upshur. The members of the J. R. Hodges family proved themselves substantial cit izens of their community. Operated general store. Charter members of the Methodist Protestan t denomination class in 1836 in the home of Jacob Lorentz, Lorentz, West Virginia. Descendant s of the John Ryan Hodges family who have continued to live in the Hodgesville area are in th e main still ardent supporters at "Low Gap", now the Methodist Episcopal denomination.
