Notes: He was a "hero" of the Americn Revolution and was a contemporary of George Rogers Clark and T homas Jefferson. In fact, he was born in the same town as Jefferson, in the same year that th e president was born.
He served a while in the Virginia House of Burgesses and he was a sheriff for the western cou nties of Virginia.
A chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is named for him in West Virginia.
Supposedly, he was a slave owner who had a devoted slave who loved him so much that he wante d to be buried at Lowther's feet. This did come to pass!
