Edgerton Town Hall Destroyed!!
Wednesday, June 23 a storm with 110 mph winds swept through the center of Edgerton, Ohio, destroying the 1884 town hall
and opera house. "Clem" the Civil War statue that stood guard over the village for nearly 100 years was also knocked
down and broken by the wind. In addition to the town hall and statue, a factory was damaged and several homes received
minor damage. Many trees were uprooted, but the damage was limited to a small area near the downtown and historic town
hall. The only reported injury was a fireman injured from debris falling from the town hall. The storm also destroyed
the dream of the Edgerton Historical Society to restore the town hall and opear house as a museum and civic center.
The group was within weeks of closing a deal with the village to purchase the building and begin restoration.
The Edgerton Historical Society reorganized in the fall of 2007 after the original organization dissolved several years
ago. We meet on the fourth Monday of each month in the Edgerton Library Community Room on North Michigan Avenue,
Edgerton, Ohio. The meetings start at 7 P.M. and usually last no later than 8:30.
Between 20 and 40 people gather each month to hear guest speakers, view historic Edgerton photos, view historic Edgerton
artifacts from individual collections, and discuss Edgerton's colorful history.
Anyone who is interested in the history of Edgerton is welcome to attend the meetings. The next meeting will be
in March of 2013.
