Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center Awards

And the Award Goes To......

Lettie Crocker Award

Cecil Groves

Cecil was a volunteer at the Kingman Area Food Bank for almost 20 years, and without his service there would not be a food bank. He received the Governor's Volunteer Service Award in 2012, a very high honor. Everyone who works with him is very proud of what he has accomplished.

Cecil worked with Ron Foote to find a suitable location for the food bank that stands today after their first building became dilapidated after years of use. They secured the property and Cecil went to local contractors and businessmen, asking for donations. He was able to secure materials and labor to build the new building.  The new food bank opened in November of 2005.

Lloyd Sinclair Award

Raymond Street

This gentleman has only attended the center during this past year. Yet, in this short amount of time he has managed to capture the hearts of both our staff and the volunteers who are here on a daily basis. He is a diligent worker getting the routine chores that he loves to do done as soon as he comes in and then asks if there is anything else that he can do. He tries very hard whatever the task and always wears a smile.  His can do attitude is a big help and we really appreciate his efforts and uplifting spirit! He often exclaims with a teasing chuckle, “You're the boss, you've got to keep the boss happy”... He loves to lightly tease and brighten everyone's day.

Congratulations Raymond Street. The Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center appreciates your dedicated service to our center.

Kathryn Heidenreich Award

Bonita Johnson

This fine lady has a long history of helping others. She started attending  the center in January 2012. She still remembers her first volunteer assignment, and has made a big impact on “center life” ever since. She is here most days with a smile, and attends almost every event. No job is too big or too small for her. She will do whatever is necessary to achieve a positive outcome for each project, often taking part in the planning process with staff. She is very creative, helping the staff vision come to life or suggesting ideas of her own. She is a worker who seems to never run out of energy and is so kind to everyone, that she encourages their participation right along side her. She had a recent health scare that set her back for a while. While recovering, we would talk to her  and she would say “I'm going to get better, and I'm going to come back to the center to help with whatever I can do”.  As soon as she felt better, she was right back in the thick of things here and eager to help, and she has!

Thank you Bonita Johnson. Your service to the Kathryn Heidenreich adult Center is greatly appreciated.

Lettie Crocker Award

Dorothy Brown

This lady was born and raised right here in Kingman along with her 3 siblings.  She and her husband continued living in the community and raised their family here. She has always been very active. At first it was raising animals, riding horses, hunting, and fishing. Later it was owning a business or “2”, and the LDS church where she has worshiped since the age of 21.  This lady loves Kingman and it's people! She gives back to this community with her whole heart every chance she gets.  She remains active in the Kingman Cancer Care Unit, still serving as their president.  They meet here at the center, and each meeting she personally prepares and brings a meal for the members to enjoy during their meeting. She cares for each person as though they were a member of her family. She is an active member of the Pioneer Daughters and has also been president of this organization.  These are just the highlights! The other organizations she has touched, both past and present, are many.

The Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center would like to acknowledge the work of Dorothy Brown, a hard working and dedicated volunteer, A true “Pioneer” for her community. Congratulations!

Cecil convinced all of the grocery store managers and corporate offices to donate their pull by date foods. Good examples of these are produce, deli, bread/bakery, dairy, dented cans.  He also included special holiday items, such as decorations, whatever the stores were willing to donate on behalf of those in our community that were less fortunate. He also spoke to the employees of these same stores about monetary donations to the food bank, and was also able to secure several grants to help with funding. They still receive some of this funding today.

Cecil spoke with various organizations about having food drives and other contributions to help replenish the food supply on a regular basis.  Many of these organizations continue to do this each year.

Cecil can be very persistent when he is working on something he strongly believes in like helping to feed those less fortunate. This has always been his passion.  Without Cecil's dedication and true volunteer spirit, the many families and senior citizens  that come through the doors of  the Kingman Community Food Bank would not be as fortunate as they are today.

The Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center is proud to present him with the Lettie Crocker Award for outstanding work in our community.

The Midge Whiteard Award

Mr. Rex Becker

Rex Becker is one of those rare people who cast their guiding light brightly in every aspect of their lives. Rex enjoyed a sterling career as a banker, recognized as one of Kingman’s most successful and respected business leaders, setting the standard for those around him.

He has always been ready to serve on any charitable or non-profit board needing him. The word “no” is alien to him.

His long years heading up the annual tax-assistance program for the needy have seen him devote hundreds of hours helping people prepare tax returns. Serving for years as the treasurer of the Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center he literally reinvented its financial structure and saved the center huge sums in doing so and set a new standard for excellence in board service that continues to inspire the board’s every effort, paying off hugely in improved service to the center’s clients. He is known as a solid supporter of the Mohave County Historical Society, Kingman Regional Medical Center and Mohave Community College among many other organizations.

He is the epitome of the dedication to public service and selfless support for our community which makes him an immediate candidate for any award or recognition possible. Mention his name and everyone smiles!

Congratulations from the Kathryn Heidenreich Adult Center.  We appreciated your many years of dedicated service.
