What's the difference between
a "high-end" scooter and a
motorcycle?
There are a number of differences that
differentiate
between a "scooter" and a motorcycle. First of all, ALL scooters
have a floorboard where you can put your feet. Motorcycles
usually
just have foot pegs to put your feet on. Scooters usually do not
have you shift gears, such as that on a motorcycle. Scooters
usually
have one "gear". Unless the throttle is beyond an idle state,
scooters
are usually in "neutral". Only motorcycles have the
characteristic
high gas tank, which is usually between your knees when riding
it.
Below is a table that will help you out:
Item | Motorcycles | Scooters |
Where your feet go | Foot pegs | Floor board |
Gas tank | High, usually between your knees | In floor board or toward the back |
Maximum speeds | Often 100+ MPH | 15-80 MPH, depending on model |
Weight | Usually 300-600 LB, but can be heavier |
Usually 40-500 LB |
Wheel diameter | Usually at least 20" | Usually 8-16" |
Engine sizes | Usually over 400 cc | Usually under 200 cc, but can be as high as 600 cc |
Gears | Often have at least 3 gears and may also have reverse gear | Usually has one gear |
