MAKING A CD (Part I)
Rusty describes how a CD is made, form initial idea to final product. In this
workshop he covers:
*when to make a CD
*how to obtain financing
*how to find and work with graphic artists, designers and photographers
*how to choose a studio
*how to market the CD.
MAKING A CD (Part II)
Rusty demonstrates how an album is recorded in the studio. Most recordings are
not "live" (as we imagine a band performing), but layered, each instrument recorded
separately and then mixed together onto a final master tape. Rusty discusses
exactly how multi-track recordings are made. Included are the roles played by
the engineer, the producer, and musicians who put together the final product.
COMPUTERS AND MUSIC
With his Macintosh Powerbook, Rusty demonstrates some of the programs and techniques
that he used in his own studio to compose and record his latest compact disc.
The workshop covers multi-track digital audio recording, MIDI (musical instrument
digital interface) and music composition (over) and learning programs. The workshop
can be tailored to any age group from junior high to college level. Attendees
must have a basic knowledge of music and be interested in computers.
CREATING NEW MUSIC FROM TRADITIONAL TUNES
Beginning with a simple fiddle tune and using arranging and composing techniques,
Rusty shows how traditional music can be developed from stark melody into a
rich musical landscape. These techniques are those used by musicians to arrange
solo tunes for larger ensembles, to adapt tunes to new instruments and to new
musical genres. In this way, traditional music has inspired musicians through
the ages. Students will see how musical ideas are reborn with each succeeding
generation.
THE POPULAR GUITAR (AND OTHER STRINGED INSTRUMENTS)
Rusty demonstrates and discusses the versatility of the guitar, mandolin and
other stringed instruments. The guitar enjoys a popularity unsurpassed by other
instruments. It is used in folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, rock and classical
music. It can be used as a rhythm, accompaniment, or lead instrument. Rusty
discusses why the guitar has become so popular, and demonstrates finger picking,
flat picking , and even percussive techniques. For high school and college level
students he will demonstrate improvisation and more advanced playing techniques.
IMPROVISATION

progressions used in jazz. Active participation by music students is encouraged.
JAZZ HISTORY

Dixieland, swing, bebop, cool modal, avant-garde and fusion. Demonstration by
recorded examples.
WIND SYNTHESIZERS

technology and examples of its use in modern music. Applicable to performers
on all wind instruments.
