German Battlecruisers
German battlecruisers were generally somewhat different than their British contemporaries. They tended to trade off gun size and/or numbers in favor of better protection, while their British counterparts emphasized speed and firepower over protection. German battlecruisers were fitted with 28cm (11") guns only until the Derflinger class of 1914, which carried 30.5cm (12") guns; the first British battlecruisers carried 12" guns, and from 1910 on they carried 13.5" or larger guns. World War I era German battlecruisers had at least 9.75" thick side armor, while their British equivalents had no more than 9" and in some cases as little as 6". The German battlecruiser also benefitted from more advanced boiler designs, which did not force as large a tradeoff between speed and protection as the heavier British boilers.

The battle of Jutland (31 May - 1 Jun 1916) strongly suggested that the German formula was right.

Some people have classified the Scharnhorst class as battleships, because their protection was much better than that on British battlecruisers, but we think of them as battlecruisers in the German small-gun tradition.

German Armored Ships, or Panzerschiffe, (AKA "Pocket Battleships")
The Deutchland class armored ships were an attempt to get around restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was restricted to building ships that were no larger than 10,000 tons, which was the size limit for cruisers under the Washington Treaty of 1922. The Panzerschiffe officially displaced about 10,000 tons (though in reality displacement was significantly higher) and mounted six 283mm (11 inch) guns, which made them comparable to a small battleship. With a top speed of 27 knots they were slower than cruisers of the day, at but substantially faster than the World War I era battleships of the British, French, and American fleets. The larger Kreuzer P class would have been faster, at 33 knots, about equal to other cruisers of the era.

German name prefixes
In the World War I era, German ship names were prefixed with "SMS", which stood for Seine Majistat Schiff, or "His Majesty's Ship".

In the World War II era, there were apparently no prefixes to the ships' names. We've seen some sources use "KM" or "DKM" for Kriegsmarine or Deutchland Kriegsmarine, but nothing official that we've seen suggests the use of any prefix in that era.

German Battleship Chronology

August 1914-November 11 1918: World War I. Defeat for Germany.

14 Nov 1918: German fleet interned at the British naval base at Scapa Flow.

21 June 1919: The Grand Scuttle: The bulk of the German fleet, interned at Scapa Flow, scuttles itself in the (justified?) belief that their ships would be siezed by the British.

Nov 1919: Treaty of Versailles: German battleships limited to 10,000 tons.

Jan 1939: Admiral Erich Raeder's ambitious "Plan Z" construction program is approved.

1 September 1939-6 May 1945: World War II. Defeat for Germany.
