E., 93rd O.V.I., and served three years. On September 20, 1863 he was taken prisoner at the battle of Chicamauga [sic], and incarcerated at Danville, Va. After twelve months imprisonment he with two other soldiers escaped by tunneling. For thirty days they wandered through the country, progressing at night toward the Union lines, and receiving occasional assistance from the loyal negroes. When within one days march of the Union lines, they were recaptured by the Confederates and put back into prison. Two months later they were exchanged, and got back to their own lines. In early youth he followed the trade of butcher, and in 1868 moved on a farm. He was a successful farmer, and an intelligent and prosperous tobacco grower. He was remarkably well posted in tobacco raising, and was always keenly interested in the tobacco market, which he followed closely. About two years ago he removed to Miamisburg, residing with his wife and daughter, Miss Ella, on South Main street. Just fifty years ago he was united in marriage in Dayton to Miss Mary Baker, who survives him, and the family was preparing for the golden wedding celebration, to occur in a few weeks.
