Notes: Hugh Hughes, a son of William and Sudra Hughes, was born in VA and married Susannah ---- ther e. About 1750, he moved with his family to present day Hampshire County WV and located on a 4 80 acre tract of land on the Great Cacapon river. Hugh's will was probated May 10, 1763 and S usannah's will was probated April 11, 1791. Seven children were named in the two wills. From : "The Hughes Family From Virginia to Oregon": by: Patty Barthell Myers Burke Publishing Comp any San Antonio, Texas (1999): About 1750 Hugh Hughes took his family and went with his fathe r and others north-westward toward the Fairfax land of Frederick County. There he acquire d a tract of 480 acres on the Great Cacapon River, adjoining that of his brother Thomas in wh at is now Hampshire County, West Virginia. (Hacker's Creek Journal, 3:33.) The following reco rds are from Saga and Jones, Early Records, Hampshire Co., Virginia, Now West Virginia, pp. 2 7-28: 12 Feb 1759 - HUGHES, Hugh (wife Susanna) of Hampshire Co., to Benjamin Fry of Frederic k Co., (lease and release) 33 acres 105 poles, along Cape Capon Creek; recorded 13 Feb 1759 . Wit.: H. Churchill, James Ireson, Peter Casey. 6 May 1763 - HUGHES, Susannah, widow, and Hu ghes, William (eldest son of Hugh hughes of Hampshire Co.) to Benjamin Fry of Hampshire Co. ( lease and release) 33 acres on Cape Capon Creek: recorded 10 May 1763. Wit.: Sam Dew. Hugh Hu ghes of Hampshire County and Colloney [sic] of Virginia made his will on 9 Jan 1762, and it w as proved 10 May 1763. He bequeathed to loving wife Susanah Hughes one ful [sic] third part o f all my real and personal. To son William Hughes and his heirs 200 acres of land out of th e home plantation. To son James 200 acres of land out of home plantation. To my son Hugh Hugh es 40 acres of land out of old plantation with grist mill thereon and a survey on the mill ru n above said mill containing 200 acres. Sons Evan and Jonathan Hughes were required by execut ors to be six years to such trade as they shall choose. Executors: son William Hughes and Jos eph Powell. Witnesses: Joseph Howe, James Sears. Susanna Hughes of Cape Capon in Hampshire County and State of Virginia, wid ow, made her will 8 Mar 1784, proved in Hardy County Court Apr 11, 1791. Son William Hughes o ne shilling sterling. Son James one shilling sterling. Son Hugh one shilling sterling. Son Jo nathan a white face cow named Sill and one sheep. Granddaughter Hannah a cow and calf and a r ed heffer and a ewe and lambs. Mary frazer one ewe and lamb. Daughter Mary one shilling sterl ing. Daughter Hannah one shilling sterling. Granddaughter Hannah my bed and beding. Son Eva n all the stock of horses, cattle, sheep and every other thing household goods. Sole executor : Son Evan. Court Records show name to be Susanna Hughes. (Hacker's Creek Journal, 3:34.)
