Owl Prowl on the trail
Despite the trail being closed at dusk, Friday evening Dec. 4th found the NorthWest St. trailhead
crowded with prowlers...owl-prowlers, that is... Recently, the FRTT Trustees voted to allow night-time trail use in the
name of science. 20+ "prowlers" including members of the Firelands Audubon Society, are interested in knowing if there is
an owl-population on / near our rail-trails so they set out, after dark, armed with flashlights and sound recordings of various
Ohio owls. The night was cold but clear and the sky was dotted with so many stars that flashlights really weren't needed to
navigate the trails. The Auduboners played sound recordings of a Barn Owl, Barred Owl and Eastern Screech owl in hopes of
attracting their attention while the 'prowlers' patiently waited for more than an hour. But, alas, a visit from an owl or
two was not meant to be ... maybe they were out to dinner or holiday shopping. Trail users have reported hearing at least
one Barred Owl so another 'prowl' might be scheduled in a couple of months. -Lisa Wendt

Late Autumn trail walk
Went walking west of Monroeville with wife Carol. Enjoyed perhaps the last 50+ degree day of the year. Started the walk
with warm sunshine, but as we walked a bank of grey clouds moved in and the breeze picked up. It started sprinkling just as
we got into the truck to go home. The sun is so low on the horizon this time of year.

Our History
Excel Bike and Fitness has been serving Northern Ohio cyclists from our Norwalk
location since at least the 1930s, possibly earlier. Originally known as Ynot Cycle Shop, in 1954 Arnold and Ethel
Missler purchased the shop and they served the community as "Arnie's Cycle" for 35 years. In 1989, the couple
retired and sold the business to their son, Joe, and his wife, Carol. They continue as owners today. It is a privilege to
have so many satisfying relationships with so many good customers.
Excel Bike has been active in community-based events and programs for many years.
The most recent undertaking is our participation with Firelands Rails To Trails in the long-range plan to develop
the Huron County portion of the North Coast Inland trail. This trail corridor stretches from west of Toledo to Cleveland
and connects many small communities between.
