Notes: Family tradition says that he was a Methodist circuit rider, but the Methodist archives do no t have any record of this. From the land suit son John brought over his estate, he spent muc h of his adult life in the Tygart Valley, in what is now Marion County, then Monongalia. Mo st of his children stayed in that area, and Mary Catherine returned to Marion Co. and lived w ith her children after his death. He seems to have moved to Kanawha Co., with or followed b y sons Henry and James, about 1819. In April 1817 he bought 30,000 acres in Kanawha Co. fro m Robert Corran and Andrew Work for $900. This tract ran along the south side of the Elk Riv er from the mouth of Big Sandy at Clendenin past Elkview almost to Big Chimney, and about tw o miles out from the river. John Snyder, who was a business partner of James' son Henry, ha d a lumber mill on this land, and milled the timber from it.

His children report his birthplace as Pennsylvania in the census, and his eldest daughter Ann a says she was born in Pennsylvania, in 1784 or 1785. His wife Mary Catherine's 1850 censu s entry says she was born in Pennsylvania, as does her daughter Anna's and Anna's husband Geo rge Watson. Daughter Mary, younger than Anna, gives her birth as Maryland in 1860 Census . Son John was born in ~1790 in Monongalia Co. (his report to the 1860 Census taker.) Ther e are no Hills on the 1782 Monongalia tax lists; no 1790 census rolls exist.
