Information
Mt. Morris is home of the Illinois Liberty Bell, located in the town square. What is now
the town square used to be the campus of one of Illinois' first institutes of higher learning, Mount Morris College. It was first a Methodist school and later affiliated with the Brethren Church. The college closed after numerous fires in the kitchen and one fire that leveled the boys' dormitory. The town has had quite
a history of fires. The old Jr. High School burned down just before the school district merged with the Oregon school
district. Later, several shops on Main Street were lost to a great fire. In the winter of 2003 the Rahn Elementary School burned down when a janitor attempted to thaw out a gas pipe with a welding torch.
Mt. Morris has numerous parks and recreation sites. These include Delihay Park, Mounder
Field, and Zicher Park.
