Our Pet Family

Our English Mastiff, Isabelle, is a character with a stubborn yet playful disposition.  She is deeply loyal and watches over the family as a true matriarch would.  Isabelle does not like strangers, but if you visit our home often (I mean really often), she will warm up to you.  Beware, if you are a raccoon, as she surely knows when you are on the carport getting into her dog food bin.  She doesn't like it one bit, just so you know.  Isabelle absolutely loves to chase the Frisbee and big sticks.  I said "chase" because she's not willing to give them up unless you have a treat in your hand.  Her favorite "sneaky trick" is to grab the dish towel off the counter and see if she can shred it before you realize she has it.  Yes, we've bought many dish towels in the past few years.
Molly, our collie mix, is the lively attention grabber.  Whenever you pet one animal, you will have to pet her as well.  She leaves you no choice in the matter.  Molly prefers to be outdoors, and by the looks of this picture, has just come out of the lake.  She has an electronic collar, and you will often find her sitting just at the perimeter of it "dreaming of the land beyond."  Molly is an excellent mole hunter.  Unfortunately, we have several holes in our yard, but we hate to deter her from her heartfelt task.  She really thinks it's her duty to dig up every mole in the yard.  It's hilarious to see her stalk the moving earth just like a cat stalks a mouse.

Sassy is our very antisocial Miss Priss.  When company comes, she runs.  She likes to be left alone, but every now and then, she will whine for attention.  She won't stop until she gets all the attention she needs.  Most pets have their one special place they like to sleep.  Not Sassy.  She's a rambler.  The problem is that she chooses places that have stuff on them, the top of the dresser, the bathroom cabinet, the counter top, and, yes, she clears it all off to make way.  I've learned not to put breakables or sentimental items where she can get to them.  Sassy loves to spend her time outdoors.  With one acre to roam about, she has a continual mouse source and loves to lay in the bushes down by the lake.

Cage, our big cat, is quiet and dignified.  He doesn't get in your face but will lay near you for hours.  Cage also loves to be outdoors and loves to lay under the burning bush.  You will see him in the field mousing but will never know what he caught.  He is the only cat I've ever seen who doesn't present his prey at the doorstep.  Cage will only allow you to pet him on his head.  He gets annoyed easily if you try to rub his back.  You will often find Cage grooming our mastiff.  He will flip Isabelle's ear back and clean it.  Cage loves to lick, which is highly unusual for a cat, and that sandpaper tongue will lick you for quite some time, if you can only stand it.
Daisy is Daddy's girl.  Although she loves her mommy, she will always find her way to Daddy and looks forward to him coming home from work.  She is not antisocial but chooses her attenting-getting time wisely.  She has to come to you and when she does -- lookout -- as she will suddenly climb your back at the computer desk just to get in your lap.  Daisy is the best lap finder I've ever seen.  She has a quiet disposition and is a Miss Priss, like Sassy, but tends to be a little more needy.  Her quiet "meow" would lead you to believe that she is the most gentle cat, but beware, when you give her treats.  She attacks her treats like a tiger going in for the kill.  Get near her and you will hear this deep guttural growl.  It's like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hide.  Daisy loves the outdoors but stays close to home, mostly wandering the flower gardens and lounging under the deck.
Sherman, aka, "the Sherminator".  A true Mommy's boy and spoiled rotten.  No doubt about it.  Sherman is very loving, but can be very aggressive when playing.  When I make the bed, he always seems to know, because as I throw the sheet on the bed, Sherman dives under it and lies in wait to attack my fingers.  When I call him in from outside, Sherman will make a mad dash when he hears "Mommy."  He follows me to bed every night, but, of course, he has an ulterior motive for going to bed when I do.  He will lay on my chest, throw his paws out to touch my chin, and spread his little fingers out for his evening "paw massage."  He absolutely loves it, and I cannot deny him the request.  Sherman is a dominant male and has a commanding presence.  Sassy does not like him at all, so she just ignores him and avoids him like the plague.  The one thing that strikes me about Sherman is that he is almost the reincarnation, so to speak, of our beloved Sylvester, who is no longer with us.  It's just uncanny how similar their personalities are.  I will see Sherman doing odd things that Sylvester used to do, and it brings a smile to my face and fond memories to mind.
