On May 28, 2008 Katie fell off her chair in her classroom while reaching for a pencil she dropped.  Apparently the way she tried to break her fall...she broke her arm. She had a "Type III Severely Displaced Supracondylar Humerus Fracture" (she broke the humerus bone just above the elbow). We rushed her to Stevens Hospital where x-rays were done, but the break was so bad and so close to major arteries and nerves, they had her transported to Childrens Hospital in Seattle where she had to have surgery to reset the bones and had pins put in and a full cast from her hand to her shoulder. Luckily they were able to set the bones perfectly and had the pins out and cast off only 4 weeks later. She was in a sling for 2 weeks after that. She will have to see her orthopedic surgeon for at least the next year to make sure that the bones are growing the way they should and it will be at least a year before she has full mobility back (she can't bend her arm all the way and it over extends more than it should). She was able to perform in her dance recital with her cast on and  returned to swim team, but just kicking with a kickboard the first week and is now using her arm, but dragging a little. She's doing great!

At the scene of the accident. This is not the chair she fell off, the chair she was on was only 12".

Notice the swollen hand and shoulder...

Nice cast...

Seeing the pins sticking out of her arm was scary.

Pulling them was even worse!

...and the pins are out!

Katie's arm didn't fit in the sling real well because she couldn't bend it enough.

We took the kids to a kangaroo farm.

Katie was happy that she could still hold a joey with her cast on.
