Still playing the classics.....
After taking
a few months of lessons on an old Lowery organ, I made my parent’s life so miserable they let me quit. Later, in high school, my friends started your typical teenagers garage/basement band. So I went to hear them rehearse in the church rec room one evening.
We ended up moving their equipment into the sanctuary so I could play the organ on some Allman Brothers tunes. That’s the beginning of the now legendary “Froc-Morton” Band.
From 1973-1976
I was in great demand as a keyboard player. Not because of my skills, mostly
because I had the equipment! During those years I also played with the country
band “ Johnny Lynch and the Lynch Mob”, and the nightclub band “Phillips, Billips, Haddox & Hughes”.
I quickly learned about the
phrase, ‘starving artist’. Being a quick learner, I quit the bands
and headed to college. After finishing pre-med at Marshall, I head to Philadelphia
to become a doctor. That was 1977. As
fate would have it, there was another West Virginia boy at the school. He’s
been one of my best buds ever since. Some of you know him as Dr. Montgomery Vickers. And some of you know him as “ Mr. Entertainment”.
Fast-forward to 2001. After not playing for 25 years, I got a call one Sunday evening from Monty. He and some friends had been playing together just for fun. They were going to play for a birthday party, but their keyboard player had just quit. The gig wasn’t for 6 days, so he suggested to his friends “BJ could do it”. With one hour of rehearsal I set in with the band for the party.
They didn’t invite me back to practice with them, but, they didn’t tell me to stay away either. That little band called “Hit or Misc.” soon evolved into what is now the legendary “Lost Cause” Band.
Now you’re
up to date. Thanks to all the band members for being such good friends even when
we’re not playing music. Thanks to my #1 fan, Jerri, and to all our family
and friends that have made this so much fun.
At this point I know you’re
thinking it’s too tall of a tale. But I’m being honest, and we have
the papers to prove it, both Monty and I did graduate!
