John Jarboe f i r s t appears In the colonies i n V i r g i n i a i n 1646.
By a deposition made 25 January 164-7 and recorded i n the Archives
of Maryland, he says he was with Governor Calvert at Kicotan
(Kecoughtan, afterwards Elizabeth City) and at York, Virginia
when the Governor was organizing his expedition against William
Claiborne,
He settled near Newtown (not f a r from present-day Leonardtown) i n
St, MaryTs County, Maryland. Various accounts of the l i f e and
a c t i v i t i e s of Colonel Jarboe follow,
No record of any other Jarboe immigrating to America has been
found. In the f i r s t United States census of 1790, a l l Jarboes
of the country lived in Maryland,
After her husband's death, Mary Tattershall Jarboe married
William Gough and l i v e d i n Calvert County, Maryland,
