Francis E. Matthews [Parents] was born 1 on 15 Sep 1870 in Ellettsville, Monroe County, Indiana, USA. He died 2 on 2 Sep 1947 in Cincinnati, Oh. He was buried in Sep 1947 in Bedford, Indiana. Francis married Katherine Smale on 12 Dec 1912 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Irvin S. Matthews was appointed as Frank's guardian because Frank was of
unsound mind.  Frank apparently died in 1947 as his will, written in 1930, was
was executed in October of that year.  The beneficiaries of his estate were
his brothers and sisters identified as:  W. Carrie Matthews, Irvin S.
Matthews, Walter N. Matthews, Mable Leonard, Cora Harris, Pansy Barnett and

KATHERINE SMALE was born in Washington, D. C. on December 19, 1872. She was the daughter of William and Katherine (Cullen) Smale. Her father was a native of Hastings, England; her mother a native of Ireland.

Katherine married Francis E. Matthews, one of nine children born to William N. and Adeline H. (Johnson) Matthews. William was the son of John and Mary (Drake) Matthews who developed the Matthews and Son Stone Quarry, later known as the Bybee Stone
Company, in Monroe County, Indiana.

On October 23, 1937, Katherine died at her home in Bloomington, Indiana. In her will, she left furs, silver, and diamonds to her sister, Florence (Smale) Gunn, of Bloomington, and her neices and nephews, her sister's children. A brother, C. W., living
in Hot Springs, Arkansas, also survived her. Katherine was buried in Bedford, Indiana.

RICE C. HARRIS, M. D., is the youngest of the six children of Thomas and Elizabeth (McCarley) Harris. He was born in Owen County. Ind., November 15, 1834, and remained at home until he was fifteen years old, when the family moved to Ellettsville, and he attended scho ol for two years, and taught in 1851. In 1852, under his brother, Dr. J. M. Harris, he commenced to study medicine, and then taught for a period of years. March 5, 1853, he married Miss Rebecca Wood, of this county, who died October, 1854, and April 14, 1857, he wedded Miss Mary J. Knighton, by which marriage they had nine children, five of whom are living - Thomas B., Rebecca W., William Vf., Oliver K. and Lizzie A. Dr. Harris attended lectures at Ann Arbor University in 1856-57, afterward engaged in practice with his brother one year, then moved to Coles County, 111. ; there practiced four years, and removed to this town, where he has remained in successful pursuit of his profession, both in surgery and medicine. Dr. Harris has of late years given attention to his farms, and is beside the owner of several dwellings and business houses. He is a Republican, and has served as Postmaster for sixteen years. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and Mrs. Harris is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
