This William Cope was born in the British Isles, possibly Scotland, and tehn migrated to Germany. He then migrated to North America, first settling on Long Island in the colony of New York. He then moved his family to Canada after the American revolution, due to teh fact he was probably a loyalist, as was his sons.

There is a good book on this family and the descendents, by Alvin L Monroe of Carlsbad, New Mexico. In it, it tells the early history of this William, as well as his sons. I don't know if it is still in print, nor where you can obtain a copy. There is a copy at teh Ft Wayne Public Library in their genealogy collection. Sorry, not available for inter-library loan, as is the rest of their genealogy collection.
