VARNER FAMILY HISTORY

My first VARNER is James VARNER,who was born in Spartanburg,South Carolina and moved to Hamilton County,Tennessee after spending some time in North Carolina.Him and his wife,Jane Austin SUTTON,are buried in a family cemetary near Soddy-Daisy,Tennessee.There has been an article in a Chattanoga,TN newspaper concerning them. Thanks to a few people in Hamilton County,I have a lot of records concerning thier descendents. They had 9 children.

Their son Allen VARNER was my 3great-grandfather.He was a farmer on top of Walden Ridge,at the end of what is now called Grant Road. One of the two Varner Cemetaries is located there as well.Allen is buried there as well as a number of his children, including Mary Jane VARNER,my 2great-grandmother,and the first wife of James Alexander SMITH.Her tombstone is hard to read, and does not mention her married name.

Allen VARNER,as well as a few nephews, fought for the Union in the cival war.One of his sons became postmaster of the Soddy,TN postoffice.
