Flaky Hygrometer Update
So I ordered a new HIH-4000 sensor and soldered it into the hygrometer. The next day, boom! More flakiness. It was jumping
between 15% and 45% RH again last Saturday, so I thought I'd experiment some more. The HIH-4000 spec sheet says that they
are sensitive to light, so I cut a 1/2" long piece of 1/4" diameter black electrical tubing and slipped it over the sensor
and went back inside to get a reading. It was steady at 45%. I removed the tubing. Again, it was jumping between 45% and 15%.
When I replaced the tubing, it stabilized at 45%. The unit does not receive direct sunlight where it is located, but it does
get quite bright on a sunny day. I left the tubing in place. The readings have been stable ever since, but it has been a week
of rainy, overcast days, so I cannot say for sure if I found the problem. It was sunny today, and relative humidity readings
were consistent.

Flaky Hygrometer
My hygrometer indication seems to jump down to about 15% relative humidity, and stay there, whenever the temperature
gets above 65 degrees Fahrenheit and the RH gets below 50%. It jumps back up when the temperature drops below 60. It looks
as if I am going to have to order a new HIH-4000 sensor if this keeps up.

Welcome!
This site is dedicated to my interest in engineering. I use it as a place to just put stuff "out there" for anyone who
might be interested, as well as a job search tool. This page contains my engineering web log (to your left). Anything that
seems timeless enough, or too involved for a log entry may get it's own page as a full-blown article. And, of course, my resume
is here for anyone who might be considering hiring me to do something. Email me.
About Me
I have worked as a broadcast engineer, electronics designer (analog and digital) and software developer. I especially
enjoy audio engineering, although I've been writing software for the last several years, since that's where the opportunities
are in the Pacific Northwest (this is Microsoft country after all). I'm currently working as a Senior Staff Engineer -- Resume at another large independent software vendor in Washington State.
I majored in mathematics and physics in college. Other interests include music appreciation (baroque, classical and early
romantic, ragtime, and 60's and 70's rock & roll), high fidelity audio electronics, meteorology and of course, computing
hardware and software. I tend to think a lot like this guy.
