Finished Building a New Server Computer
The build went flawlessly. WxService has been running in its new home with no problems for about three days now.

Building a New Server Computer
My old 200MHz Pentium VAIO is getting a little long in the tooth. The last Windows update put it in a "no boot" condition. I cannot be sure, but since that machine is not officially supported by Windows XP, I can only assume that the update contains an instruction that the old processor cannot execute.

Therefore, I ordered a new server computer for WxService. It doesn't need much horsepower to run this app. The new machine will have a 2.66GHz Cerelon D (10x faster than the old Pentium, if you can believe the CPU clock claims), and plenty of RAM (the old VAIO maxxes out at 256MB. The new MOBO maxxes out at 2GB; I'm stuffing it with 1GB).

The new hardware should be showing up on Monday, so WxService might be offline for a while, as I move it into its new home. Here's hoping the computer build goes well, and everything works, and Windows XP installs on the new hardware without complaining about piracy. I'm decommissioning the old box, so I will only be using one instance of the duly purchased license. If downtime becomes a problem, I will move the service onto my laptop while I work to troubleshoot the issues.

WxService Offline Quite a Bit Lately
The latest Microsoft Windows Update put my server in a "no boot" situation. I had to re-install Windows. I then changed some drivers and made some other changes, and tried the update again. Again, no boot. After several iterations of that (with quite a bit of down-time over a period of several days), I finally decided to forego the updates. I'll just install SP2 and leave it at that.

Note: This issue seems to be completely unrelated to WxService.

WxService Update Available
  • WxService ow4j070707
    • Weather Underground now provides a mode for near real time reporting called "Rapid Fire". This release provides some minor protocol modifications to support that mode.

Welcome!
This site is dedicated to my interest in engineering. I use it as a place to just put stuff "out there" for anyone who might be interested, as well as a job search tool. This page contains my engineering web log (to your left). Anything that seems timeless enough, or too involved for a log entry may get it's own page as a full-blown article. And, of course, my resume is here for anyone who might be considering hiring me to do something. Email me.

About Me
I have worked as a broadcast engineer, electronics designer (analog and digital) and software developer. I especially enjoy audio engineering, although I've been writing software for the last several years, since that's where the opportunities are in the Pacific Northwest (this is Microsoft country after all). I'm currently working as a Senior Staff Engineer -- Resume at another large independent software vendor in Washington State.

(not my best side)

I majored in mathematics and physics in college. Other interests include music appreciation (baroque, classical and early romantic, ragtime, and 60's and 70's rock & roll), high fidelity audio electronics, meteorology and of course, computing hardware and software. I tend to think a lot like this guy.
