Aysgarth Falls - and Beyond

It was a Sunday morning. But the vicar of St. Margaret's had just retired and the only service was at the Methodist chapel. So Nancy opted to haul Chuck on a hike to Aysgill Falls on Gayle Beck. Although it was a nice pre-breakfast hike through sheep, the path became a muddy hillside. And we never got to the falls.

A new treat: swallows.

On our first visit to Hawes, in 1995, we hiked from Aysgarth Falls to Bolton Castle and back. But we didn't really see the falls. So, this time, we did the real walk along the falls of the River Ure.

The path goes along the middle and lower falls; the upper falls are on private property. They it goes through fields and woods. It's not too strenuous - just right for a Sunday. And plenty of fauna for Nancy.

Lapwings.

From the falls, we drove through Leyburn and Middleham to Masham and the Black Sheep Brewery, for the Sunday carvery. The roasts are wonderful, with Yorkshire pudding, roast and steamed veggies, and potato. We get the "little lamb" size meals - and they are huge. And all the ales are great.

The ales, and more.

Then home to Gayle. But we have to stop at Brymor Dairy near Jervaux Abby for the best ice cream in the world. And we are ice cream fanatics. You even get to meet the cows. Well, not the ones that give the milk - the heifers that will next year.

This one really wanted attention.

And returned the favor.

A lovely way to spend Mothers' Day.
