Driving and Strolling in the Dales

Time for another rather less-strenuous day. We start with a short circle from Gayle, past the auction barns, through Hawes, and back. Then a slightly lighter breakfast. And then off to stroll through the start of market day, following the Hawes Trail, from a map from East House.

We meet Quinn the Newfie, several times, with his owner, Robert Ellis, a local teacher and historian.

And then back to get our maps and take off in the car and head north.

Buttertubs, way above Hawes.

And the moors around Buttertubs.

Through Keld. Yes, we've heading along that lane. That's at least as narrow as it looks.

Across Stonedale Moor. Passing cars is such fun. At least here, neither side is a drop.

And up to Tan Hill, the highest pub in England. The wind is always so strong that it's hard to open the car door on one side. But really easy to shut it. Inside the pub, you'll find a comfortable haven, with a warm fire, delicious ales, interesting folks - and interesting animals.

Ducklings that had hatched out back. The landlord brought them in by the fire because it was such a raw day.

Another pub cat.

And then down, way down, through Arkengarthdale to Reeth in Swaledale.

The girls have the right of way.

What bleak beauty!

Absolutely no place to park in Reeth. Odd on a week-day. So we drove back through Swaledale and over Askrigg Commons.

Swaledale.

Atop Askrigg Common looking down into Wensleydale, Bainbridge, and Semerwater.

And down into Askrigg to park in front of St. Oswald's. Then down Mill Gill Lane and off on a walk above town. At the end of the lane, we turned right and headed up - and I do mean up - through the fields - and the sheep and lambs. Then across farmland well above Askrigg, and finally, back down along Mill Gill Force and into town.

Chuck, reading our hiking directions. That's Askrigg, way down on the left.

Nancy at the old lime kiln Mill Gill Force, back almost into town.

Nancy meets two border terriers back at St. Oswald's.

Then back to Hawes and Gayle. Relax, shower, and off to the pub for dinner.
