Holmfirth: The Land of Summer Wine

We love Holmfirth. It doesn't have the wild beauty of the Dales of Hawes or of the moors outside Haworth. Or the sheep and lambs under the window or behind the next row of houses. But it's where we'd be if we could live in England.

Our usual morning walk is up to the top of Cliff Bank. And I do mean up. On any street, you're looking at the steps to a front door on one side and the roof on the other. But it's worth the climb.

Of course, we stayed at Springfield Guest House, where Bernard serves fantastic breakfasts. And is upset when we can't eat a "full English".

And we met all our old friends. Lots of friendly cats. Horses with foals up on Cliff Bank. Sparky, Meg, Lexie, Pip, Irma's dogs, and lots of other dogs. Oh, yes, and the dogs' owners. And Kevin brought Milly to Springfield House for a visit.

Of course, we visited our favorite pubs. A word of caution. Although it's rather nice to let one's elbows and knees see England - by going later in spring, it's not the wisest move. As soon as there's a hint of warmth, the landlords put on the light ales. If you want - as we do - the dark milds and best bitters, go earlier and wear long sleeves. As much as we love The Dales, we have to admit that West Yorkshire has the best dark mild in the world.

The Church Inn in Uppermill - worth the drive.

The Riverhead Tap in Marsden - a great place after a walk above Tunnel End.

The Nook, behind Victoria Square, where we drop in for a swift half each - often.

The Fleece in Holme. We're willing to do the circular walk from Holmfith to Holme to enjoy their fantastic Sunday dinner roast pork or lamb.

The Old Bridge, in Victoria Square. The place for supper and the evening.

But most of what we did was to redo or extend bits of what we did in our fortnight in Holmfirth in 2007, so why should I repeat Holmfirth: A Fortnight in Heaven?
