The Sawrys

Lately, we have discovered Beatrix Potter books. Not the ones she wrote, although they have lovely drawings. But fictional stories about her times at Hill Top Farm in Near Sawry, above Lake Windemere. So we decided to visit the area. Off across the hills into Cumbria. Through the town of Windemere and down to the ferry at Bowness. Windemere is a very long but very narrow lake. So the best way to get from one side to the other is this ferry.

Chuck, at the ferry landing.

He meets some Cavalier King Charles spaniels.

Some swans show off.

And the ferry.

We left our car on the east side and opted to walk from the ferry landing to Far and near Sawry. The designation is not, as tourists expect, distance from Windemere. It from the town of Hawkshead, which makes more sense if you live, work, and shop in the area.

We went through woods and up hills. Sometimes on footpaths; sometimes along the road. And into Far Sawry.

Chuck meets a horse along the way.

And then Sandy, a sweet border collie, at the Claife Crier, the comfortable pub.

After our well-deserved half pints, we went around the corner to Sawry Stores, a little shop, and got a delicious hot sausage roll. This refreshed, we continued along the lane to Near Sawry and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top farm. Of course, we found a border collie by an outbuilding.

We wandered the garden but decided not to go in the house. Instead, we strolled around the village, then walked up Stones Lane - and I mean up - to a dairy farm. Then back down Cookoo Brow Lane, past a huge mansion, and back into Far Sawry - and, of course, the Claife Crier.

              > This was originally a horse barn. The tables are in the stalls. Neat.

The old school that served the Sawrys. Now a community center.

And the parish church.

Then back down the lanes and paths to the ferry, across Windemere, and back home to Hawes.

And a stroll around town, and a meeting with Poppy, a sweet little smooth-coated border collie.
