Penarth was a small fishing vilage until the coal exporting boom in the mid-to late 1800's,
when it became a major port connected to the coalfields by a railway. It has always been a
popular holiday destination, especially in the Victorian era. At present, it is a major suburb
and dormitory town for folk who work in Cardiff, and sports a large pleasure pier. St. Augustine's
church was rebuilt in 1866, and was designed by the great Victorian architect William
Butterfield. There is evidence of a church on the site dating from 1242.
