Who is Mrs. J ?

Mrs. J and Dawn

One question frequently asked is "who is Mrs. J ?"........Well, Mrs. J is the grandmother of Dawn (Julien)Woods.  Her name was Emmadale Julien and she lived in Sturgis, Michigan.  Sturgis in located just north of the LaGrange, Co. line of Indiana.  "Grandma" was  a big influence in all her grandchildrens lives.  She and Grandpa "George" took a grandchild home with them almost every night.  The children were taught a lot at their grandparents home.  Grandma was a seamstress, and great teacher on how to "make due" with what you had.  She always spent time showing you how to make things, and found new uses for leftover items. (This is where Dawn learned to love designing new & useful items with leftover textiles).  Grandma taught Dawn how to use the scraps of her fabrics for, among other things,...rag rugs.  That is where the name for the brand name "Mrs.J's"  came from.
She knew how to stretch the family finances and if someone thought she was being too thrifty, she would reply: "hey you didn't live through the depression".
She and Grandpa were very giving.  They both were very active in their church.
Grandma's favorite hobby was working on mission activities.  She frequently spent her coupons on items to be sent to the needy.  She packed donated items and sent them away to various destinations.  Her home, at times, was a daily UPS stop to pick the packages up!

Grandma was Irish, full of energy, and just under 5 ft tall.  She told everyone that "dynamite comes in small packages".  She would go to the nursing home at 87 years old and say "I'm going to visit the old people".  One year she was honored with Volunteer of the year award in Sturgis, Michigan. Giving to her community was a way of life for both her and Grandpa.
