This is a draft list of books books for suggested reading along with my editorial comments regarding each one.
------------------
"The Book of the UNiMAT" D.J. Laidlaw-Dickson ISBN 0 85242591
0 (out of
print and NOT worth the $45.00 they fetch on eBay) Tough to read
since his
English is basically Colloquial Industrial Australian. Main focus
on the
Original UNiMAT DB200 and SL series. Some information on the UNiMAT
3
------------------
"Making the Most of the UNiMAT" Rex Tingey ISBN 0 85242
676 3 (out of print and NOT worth the $45.00 they fetch on eBay.
$20.00 -
yes. $45 - NO!) Also a little hard to read due to the UK heritage.
Interesting how different the "factory class" speaks in the UK
and
Australia. Mostly covers how to modify the Original Unimats to
make them do
larger and tougher jobs. Some interesting information on making
a cogged
belt system for the UNiMAT 3. (This book is out of print and NOT
worth the
$45.00 they fetch on eBay. Maybe $20.00 but NOT $45.)
------------------
"The Home Machinist's Handbook" Doug Briney ISBN
0-8306-15673-3 Great Reference based on the Sherline lathe product
line. I
virtually ALL applies to Unimats too. I consider this to MORE
valuable then
either of the above books.
------------------
"Tabletop Machining" ISBN # 0-9665433-0-0 is by Joe
Martin, who is the president of the Sherline lathe & mill company.
It reads
like two pounds of Sherline advertisement, but it offers some
VERY useful
tips and instructions from someone who learned it all the hard
way. He is a
good writer and the history he imparts makes the book less dry
than others.
I highly recommend it. It's worth the $30+ it costs.
------------------
"Metalworking in the Home Shop" E.F. Lindsley ISBN 0-8069-6814-1
One of my
personal favorites. A good place to start with home shop machining!
Also
discusses heat treating, basic welding, etc.
------------------
"How to Run A Lathe - The Care and Operation of a Screw Cutting
Lathe" South
Bend Lathe Works - Reprinted by Lindsay Publications, Inc. ISBN
1-55918-115-x A great book with really good instructions and advise.
Written in 1942 and still a good read.
------------------
"South Bend Lathe Booklets - Eight Complete 'How To' Booklets
for the
1930's" South Bend Lathe Works - Reprinted by Lindsay Publications,
Inc.
ISBN 1-55918-158-3 Every bit as good as the other South Bend book.
Highly
recommended.
------------------
Lathe Operations J.W. Barritt ISBN 1-55918-110-9 Another reprint
of a great
old (1937) instructional reference!
------------------ The Machinist's Bedside Reader The Machinist's
Second
Bedside Reader The Machinist's Third Bedside Reader Buy Lautard
1st: ISBN
0-9690980-2-2 2nd: ISBN 0-9690989-3-0 3rd: ISBN 0-9690980-9-X
These books
are a hoot! They are a great read and should be part of your metalworking
library! Guy will fill you in on what TO do and WHAT NOT to do!
------------------
"Running an Engine Lathe" Fred Colvin" ISBN 0-917914-70-8 An excellent
resource! Much to learn contained in this book.
