Our Lady of the Rubies Chapel will be an integral extension of St. Joseph's Catholic Parish located in Spring Creek, Nevada. Our Lady of the Rubies is approximately 15 miles from St. Joseph Church in Elko, Nevada. The area of Spring Creek is not incorporated into a town or city, but is a community which has a population of over 10,000 people. In the winter, the 4 lane highway leading to this area goes over a high pass called Lamoille Summit at an elevation of almost 5,800 ft. Many times the highway is snow covered and very icy. This makes for treacherous driving conditions and also makes it difficult for people to get to church in Elko.
In late 2009, after much study and approval by the Diocese of Reno, a building was purchased in Spring Creek. This building could not be used however, until much remodeling was done inorder to comply with building codes and be issued an occupancy permit. Finally in late 2010, architectural plans were approved, bids were sent out, a contract awarded and construction started for the needed remodeling. Construction is nearing completion and it is hoped Easter Services can be held in the Chapel in April 2011.
Our Lady of the Rubies Chapel will have either Mass or a communion service every Sunday at 4:00 pm. It will also be used for family Catechesis classes for the youth and adults twice a month. Parishioners participating in programs such as "Why Catholic" will be able to meet there. The chapel will be available for meetings and activities for the youth and will serve as the center for other church activities in Spring Creek and for other surrounding communities, such as Pleasant Valley, Lamoille and Lee/Jiggs. Our Lady of the Rubies Chapel will provide a much needed presence for our Catholic faith in Spring Creek and in addition to serving Catholics who live in these remote areas, it will hopefully inspire newcomers to the Catholic faith.
