USS SUFFOLK AKA-69

precomemail.jpg

The suffolk practicing the deployment of her "small boats."

She was headed for the Panama Canal with no heavy cargo in the holds. Not a too big of a deal except for the storm that met them off of Cape Hatteras, NC. The storm hit with 25' waves, breaking loose all their landing craft and snaping several cargo booms. The stories that Dad and his shipmates told of many sick sailors paint a gross picture.  The rest of the ships in the convoy thought the Suffolk was lost.
