This page is mainly for ourselves and others who do genealogy research. I want to express gratitude to the many cousins that have furnished input to the Galyean History. Most early data in North Carolina is somewhat circumstantial. Most of the data in Indiana is proven. I welcome you - our family, our friends, and occasional browsers. I hope you enjoy meeting the Galyeans of the present and the past. I would love to have you as a cousin, so check out our surnames, and if you have a connection please let me know. If you find any errors or questionable information, please let me know. If my information can help others God Bless.
The first known Galyean was William Gallion or Gallienne. William was born about 1592 in London, Middlesex, England and died after 1635 in London. Some researchers believe the original spelling is from the French name of Galliene but this has not been proven. The name has a undergone a number of spelling variations between then and today. William was married to Joan (Johan) Palmer on 23 June 1614. William and Joan’s youngest child was Joseph Gallion, born about 1635 in London, Middlesex, England. He died after about 1797 in Baltimore, MD. Joseph and his wife, Alice, emigrated to America in 1664. He was the first known Galyean/Gallion to settle in America. He settled in Baltimore County, MD. This area is now part of Hartford County, MD.
It is obvious the Galyean/Gallion/Galyon family in America originated from the Old Joseph Gallion in Maryland. Records have several generations of Gallions residing in Maryland from 1681 to 1800. My lineage is believed to originate from the following: Jacob Gallion, son of Thomas and Mary Young Gallion, was born 12/11/1733. This Thomas was the son of John and Mary Gallion and grandson of the above Joseph. Jacob married Elizabeth Arnold 2/24/1755. Their first son, Thomas, was born 3/17/1758 in Maryland. Jacob and his family moved to Surry County, NC. about 1778.
Thomas Gallion resided in Surry County, North Carolina from about 1782 to until 1802. Records show that Thomas served about 4 and one-half years in the Revolutionary War. See Thomas Gallion in NC. Thomas migrated to Grainger County, Tennessee about 1802. He then relocated his family to Preble County, Ohio and Wayne County, Indiana on or before November 1, 1811. At that time he had a wife, Margaret Williams, and the following children - Jacob, Thomas Jr., William, Daniel, and Sophia. At this point he became Thomas Galyean. If there were other children, they have not been proven. Most of the descendants of Thomas Galyean in Indiana are well documented from 1810 to the present. See The Galyean Family - 150 Years in Indiana
A number of Galyean’s served in the various military conflicts. Family members served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, and the Korean Conflict. Allen Wesley Galyean is the author of some Civil War letters describing life in the Civil War.
