Temperment
Airedales are smart, patient , assertive & Ingenious.
- They are so intelligent that they can figure out how to open things and out
think you!
- Airedales are very loyal, but very stubborn.
- They usually only bark when they are alerting you to something or they want something.
- They are good with children and other household pets.
Playing & Exercise
- Airedales need a lot of exercise
- If they don't have other dogs to play with, you will have to spend at least an hour a
day of non stop play.
- Our Airedales love to play tug-of-war and fetch.
- Airedales destroy toys easily.
- Our one Airedale loves to play fetch with a 6 inch tennis ball.
- Our other Airedale loves to play with stuffed animals. Unstuffed is best.
- They will also rough house in the house.

Special Concerns
- Airedales need plenty of exercise & needs human companionship.
- If left for too long, there will be behavior problems and destructive behavior.
- I was gone for longer than usual and my airedale knocked down my garbage can &
spread garbage all over the house.
- If you do not do what an airedale wants you to do, You Will be Punished.
- They will need direction and disciplined.
Grooming
- You must have them groomed every 6-8 weeks, by stripping or clipping.
- If you let them go unclipped, which is called the teddy bear look,
they will get matted.
- The hair mats easiest on the legs, rear end and chest.
History
- Airedale Terriers come from Great Britain, In the valley (dale),
in Yorkshire, near the river of Aire. Hence the name Airedale.
- It is thought to be a cross between an Otterhound & Old English
Black & Tan Terrier.
- It was also known as a Waterside Terrier & Bingley Terrier.
- They were used as Otter hunters, Grizzly Bear hunters, police dogs &
guide dogs for the blind.
