"ZERO INTOLERANCE"
This painting depicts Major Gregory S. "Pappy" Boyington in his F4U Corsair "LuLuBelle" scoring yet
another victory over an Imperial Japanese Zero fighter in the South Pacific. On October 17th, 1943, Major Boyington
led his famous "Black Sheep" squadron over Kahili airdrome in New Guinea to an astounding victory. 60 enemy aircraft were
grounded at the airdrome, refusing to come up and fight. Major Boyington challenged the Japanese over the radio to come up,
constantly circling the enemy field. The enemy finally accepted the challenge and 20 Japanese fighters were shot down
in the ensuing action without loss of one of the "Black Sheep" aircraft. For this action among others, "Pappy" Boyington was
awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Boyington was credited with 6 victories while with the Flying Tigers of the
American Volunteer Group (AVG), and 22 victories as a Marine aviator for a total of 28.
Here I might describe the photo above.
