Remembering Carolyn . . .

Carolyn June Gregg is born November 24, 1942, at St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, the second child of Donald Cecil Gregg and Josephine (Zbin) Gregg. She is baptized at St. Vincent DePaul Church in Pontiac.

Carolyn is very active musically in school, playing the alto saxophone in Vermilion School's marching and concert bands for seven years. She graduates from Vermilion High School in June 1960.

Carolyn meets husband-to-be Ronald Bellar one weekend in 1960 when big brother Don brings college roommate Ron to see Vermilion. Carolyn and Ron spark, setting the stage for the continued future of the Gregg and Bellar bloodlines. They marry May 5, 1962, at St. Mary Church in Vermilion. Ron immediately wisks her off to Dover, Delaware, where he works.

In May 1962, Ron and Carolyn move to Mobile, Alabama, where they start their family with David (May 17, 1963). In 1964, the family moves to Springfield, Ohio, where they add: Peggy (August 22, 1964), Jeanette (July 13, 1966), Donald (June 15, 1967), Ronald (October 8, 1968), and Thomas (February 5, 1970). After moving to Milford, Michigan, the family is topped off with twins Mary and Robert (June 12, 1972).

In August 1967, Carolyn receives a sign of the future. [Apparently, she pays no heed.] Peggy and David observe while Mommy feeds Donald and Jeanette. [And what is Ronald doing?]

cafe

Carolyn opens the restaurant "Sunnyside Cafe" in downtown Milford in 1974. With a 29-gallon fish tank supporting a large albino catfish and a few other tank mates, customers are never alone. Each Thanksgiving, the restaurant is opened to the area's less fortunate to enjoy a terrific meal.

osu osu Customers quickly learn how devoted Carolyn is to the Ohio State Buckeyes, especially when they are playing a Michigan team. Mascot Brutus was always watching.

She was loved by the residents and known as "Queen of the Milford Coffee Drinkers!"

In April 1985, Carolyn closes the Cafe.

Carolyn always admired her father. Dad liked to boast about the size of sunflowers he could grow. In his memory, Carolyn worked hard to duplicate his techniques.

(1989) On the back of this picture she writes:

"I grew this flower in memory of Daddy.
      For you, Mom
      Love, Carolyn"

In 1992 Carolyn acquires a case of gangrene developing from a cut on her big toe. Complications set in due to her diabetes and a portion of her left foot is amputated. Walking must be relearned.

Carolyn remained in the same house in Milford until her death. While there, she enjoyed her children getting married and starting their own families. She was their pillar of Christian faith and she required that each of them leads a "good" life.
