Mary Louise "Maria" Novotny is born on June 4, 1895, in Hloza, Austria-Hungary (later known as Czechoslovakia and other names). She is the fifth of nine children born, all in Austria-Hungary, to John Novotny (born in 1864) and Zuzanna (Kucharik) Novotny (born in 1867). John and Zuzanna's children are:
Four members of Mary's family move to the United States--John, Joseph, Mary, and Suzanne. Mary sails aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm II from Bremen, Germany, and first enters the United States through Ellis Island on April 27, 1909, hoping to improve her life. She is 13 years old.
While living in Lakewood, Ohio, Mary meets Paul Zbin, and on July 17, 1911, they marry in Lakewood.
Zuzanna (Great-Grandma Novotny) dies after 1920. John (Great-Grandpa Novotny) dies in 1948.
Grandma Zbin dies February 7, 1951, from leukemia while visiting a friend in Oceanside, California. She is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.
