Children of John & Lydia Emery
Joel Joseph EMERY (son of John EMERY & Lydia [last name unknown]) was born about 1800 in Rowan County, NC. He died in Dec 1879 in Ridge Township, Union County, IL. He is listed in the mortality schedule of 1880 Census as having died Dec 1879 from pneumonia, widowed, born in North Carolina, father born in North Carolina, mother born in South Carolina (but probably was North Carolina). He lived in Union County, IL for 38 years.
Some family records have his birth year in 1800, which would be more in line with his spouse's birth date. However, the 1850 Census lists him as being 38 years old, which would make his birth year in 1812.
He was a farmer. In 1850 Census, his real estate value was listed as $160.
Joel married Eve "Eva" or "Evici" FITE, daughter of Henry Theophilus FITE, Sr. and Barbara (or Deborah) FRALEY, on 17 Mar 1828 in Rowan County, NC. Eve was born about 1805 in Rowan County, NC. She died before 1880 in Union County, IL.
Joel & Eva had the following children.
William EMERY was born in Mar 1830 in Rowan County, NC. Nothing more is known about him.
Henry EMERY was born about 1831 in Rowan County, NC. He worked on his father's farm according to the 1850 Census. Nothing more is known about him.

David EMERY was born about 1838 in Rowan County, NC. He died on 18 Oct 1864 in Cairo, IL probably from disease. He is probably buried in Cairo, IL. He may be a twin with Avia A. Emery listed below.
A "David Emming" is listed in a reference book of Civil War veterans in the library in Mascoutah, IL. This David is buried at Cairo, IL. It is not clear if his remains were reinterred and buried in the Mound City National Cemetery. "David Emming" died in Cairo on the same date that David Emery died in Cairo. It is possible that this is the same person as our David Emery.
According to Soldiers of Union County, IL (Dexter 1997), David was a private in Company B of the Illinois 109th Infantry. He was a farmer and married at the time. He enlisted on 15 Aug 1862 at age 23 at South Pass Township in Union County, IL and mustered in on 18 Sep 1862. He transferred to Company G of the Illinois 11th Infantry and died 17 Oct 1864 on the Mississippi River below Cairo, IL (Dexter also listed his death as 18 Oct 1864. Therefore, he may have been pronounced dead on the 18th at the hospital in Cairo, IL).
David was probably buried in a grave near the levee in Cairo, IL. The exact location is not known. However, it is possible that he may be one of the unknown soldiers buried at Mounds National Cemetery in Mound City, IL.
David Emery married Cynthia Ann MILLIGAN on 24 Oct 1861 in Jackson County, IL. They had no known children together.
Avia A. EMERY was born about 1838 in North Carolina. She may be a twin with David Emery listed above. Nothing more is known about her.

The following are notes on the Emery's from a page of "The Abraham Hembree Data Project".
Joel is believed to be the son of John Hembrie (Emery), born in 1766 in North Carolina and lived in Rowan County, NC.
Joel Hembry married Eve Fite on 17 Mar 1828 in Rowan County, NC. Eva Fite was born circa 1805 in NC, the daughter of Henry Fite and Deborah Fraley. Joel is listed in the 1830 and 1840 Census for Rowan County, NC, but was in Illinois by 1845. According to the 1850 Census, his youngest son, Moses, was born 1843 in Kentucky.
Rowan County was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. Originally, Rowan County was a vast territory with an indefinite western boundary. Reductions in its extent began in 1770, when the eastern part of it was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County, NC. In 1771, the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777, the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788, the western part of the now much smaller Rowan County became Iredell County. In 1822 the eastern part of the still shrinking county became Davidson County. Finally, in 1836 the part of Rowan County north of the South Yadkin River became Davie County.
In the 1860 Census for Union County, IL, Joel is listed as "Joseph Emery" (age 60) with wife "Evie Emery" (age 55).
Joel Emery bought land in Union County, IL on 15 Jan 1844.
Moses Emery bought land in Illinois on 29 Apr 1871.
Civil War soldiers include Joel Emery's sons; Joel Emery's eldest son, William, remained or returned to North Carolina. He may have served in the Confederate Army. Joel had four other sons who served in the Union Army; James, John, David, and Moses.
