I am currently working on two scratch built robots. For this one, I am using a Tarantula RC Vechicle as the platform. At this point it is no more then the vehicle, some PVC pipe, a 20 L.E.D. lamp, and a wireless camera.
I hope to add at least one micro-controller, arms with grippers, and some sensors as time allows.
I've found the transmitter and receiver are powerful enough to control the vehicle over most of my property from my living room using the wireless camera and TV to navigate. I can control it thru all 10 rooms and the back and front yards.

Here are some pictures of  the housebot going down steps. It can climb these steps as easily. Luckily, someone built some non-standard steps at this house. It can go down steps with a standard pitch, but is it is more difficult and tedious to make it sucessfully climb them.

The gears are plastic, but the chain drive is metal.

I mounted the arms using metal axles from rc cars, wooden spindles cut from a scrap piece of 1x8. I had 1 1/2" hole cutter that fit the 1 1/2" plumbing.
I mounted the 7.2V motors from the car under the shoulders and used a VEX gear kit I caught on sale for $6 to connect the motors to the arms.
I started running the electronics but nothing is connected at this point.
