Hi, my name is Carmaletta Harris Gates, but most people call me Carrie. I was born in Sylva, North Carolina in
1953. I grew up at Wolf Creek in the Canada Community of Jackson County. I have one brother, Billy, my dad
was John Lee, and my mom is Reba Harris. I lived in the Canada Community for the first forty years of my life.
I am a mountain storyteller and often tell stories at Mountain Heritage Day the last Saturday of September at Western
Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. I am the author of Granny Tales: North Carolina Mountain Tales, a
collection of local stories and poems. If you'd like to see my book click on the book image, then scroll to the bottom
of the page.
I currently live in Dillsboro, NC, with my husband, David Gates, and youngest daughter, Ashley Gates. My middle
daughter, Sarah Moses, is currently in Las Vegas, Nevada where she works as a project manager for Fisher Technical.
Carolyne finshed Western Carolina University with a BS degree in sociology, she currently works as the director of rehabilitation
for Webster Enterprises. Sarah has a MFA degree in technical theatre from the University of Arizona, and Ashley
ia in the middle of her sophomore year at Smoky Mountain High School. I completed my doctoral studies and dissertation
in Adult and Higher Education for an EDD degree from NC State University in Raleigh in 2007.
My husband David is a licensed building contractor in North Carolina, in fact the first blind individual to pass the
test. He currently builds, remodels, and renovates houses.
David, and I own Bradley's General Store ( www.bradleysgeneralstore.com) in Dillsboro, NC. Bradley's is an old time general store with a real soda fountain. We sell all kinds of products, focusing
on retro lines. Bradley's is located directly across from the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, which has stopped running out
to Dillsboro, but plans to run back to Dillsboro for four months out of the year. Needless to say, the railroad leaving Dillsboro
has been an economic disaster for the town.
David and I, along with Eddie Cope, also own Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva. Owning a funeral home is something
we would have never though we might do. but I have spent my life taking care of teachers and David loves people. Eddie has
spent his life working in and with funeral homes, so we feel we have a strong foundation. We moved into a brand new
building, and have pt a lot of our own personalities into the endeavor.
