The years have slipped by and the cemetery plot is filling up. My Mom's marker has her name, Dena Hertel, and her favorite verse, Psalm l9:1&, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer." She spent the last 7 years of her life as a bedfast invalid, but never did she complain. She accepted her affliction as the Lord's will, never lost her sense of humor, and smiled through it all, and challenged every visitor as they left to KEEP LOOKING UP!

Johannes W. "Joseph" Hertel [Parents] was born 1, 2 on 19 Nov 1894 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. He died 3 on 7 Oct 1955 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. He was buried 4 on 10 Oct 1955 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. Joseph married 5 Gladys Bell Goold 6 on 17 Aug 1921 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA.

Joseph worked as Pres GR Real Estate Board.

WWI vereran. Active in Westminister Presbyterian Church.

Next I came to where Uncle Joe and Aunt Gladys are buried. Uncle Joe was a realtor, president of the real estate board, and active in civic and political affairs. He always encouraged me in my-study of music, and I enjoyed giving him a "mini concert" once in a while. He wrote the words and music of a song which he inscribed to his missionary sister, Aunt Anne Goudberg. The last verse says:
    There's a word on the lips of the Savior,
        Commanding, compelling, and clear;
    'Tis His summons to battle and victory
        To all who would follow Him here.
    Go ye forth everywhere-—preach the Gospel,
        Let the banner of hope be unfurled.
    And lo, I am with you always,
        Even unto the end of the world.
His tombstone proc1aims the message of Psalm 9l:l,2——He who dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God; in Him will I trust." Uncle Joe and Aunt Gladys kept the social life of the Hertel Clan going. I recall a Christmas day when they entertained the dozens of cousins in their massive living room. We had red and green popcorn balls and punch, gathered around the piano and sang carols, and spent the evening just enjoying one another's company. [THE HERTEL FAMILY HERITAGE by Leona Hertel]

Gladys Bell Goold 1 was born 2 on 23 May 1895 in Canfield. She died 3, 4 on 18 Mar 1967 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. Gladys married 5 Johannes W. Hertel "Joseph" on 17 Aug 1921 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA.

As I stood before Aunt Gladys' grave I thought of her life as a widow. She returned to teaching school, and was so grateful for that outlet. She had so much love to give and received much in return. The words inscribed on her tombstone are a fitting description: "Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God, and everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love" (1 John 4:7,8) [THE HERTEL FAMILY HERITAGE by Leona Hertel]
