"Funeral services were to be held this afternoon for John W. Hertel, 56, of 1126 Iroquois Dr., S.E., who died of a heart attack last Thursday morning at Lakeworth, Fla., a day after he and his wife arrived here for a vacation.

"The Rev. George Gritter was to officiate at the rites and burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.

"Mr. Hertei was a partner and co-founder of the Hertel-Deyo Construction Co.

"Surviving are the wife, five bothers, Benjamin, Joseph, George and William of Grand Rapids and Arnold of Holland; two sons, Jerry and Robert; two sisters, Mrs. William Goudberg of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Agnes Vermeer of Oakland, Calif., and five grandchildren."

Uncle John and Aunt Anne are buried next to their young grandson. My Dad and Uncle John were avid sportsmen and often went together on hunting and fishing trips. Years after both has passed away, a man (Joe Zoet) who had been on one of their hunting excursions in Upper Michigan related to me the following incident. He said, "One night heading back to camp we took a shortcut across the lake. Your Uncle John fell through the ice. The men in the party made a human chain and rescued him from a watery grave. When we returned to camp we built a fire, and had a prayer meeting. It was then that your Uncle realized his need to personally acknowledge Christ as his Savior, and he did." Knowing this, how fitting to read on his tombstone John ll:25, "I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were head, yet shall he live." [THE HERTEL FAMILY HERITAGE by Leona Hertel]

Anna van Tongeren was born 1, 2 on 18 Dec 1898 in The Netherlands. She died 3 on 12 Jul 1976 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. She was buried 4 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. Anna married John William Hertel on 17 May 1921.

Anna immigrated 5 on 22 Oct 1907 to Ellis Island.

And next to Uncle John his dear wife, our Aunt Anne. I remember how beautiful she was-- lovely silver hair and always dressed in soft pastel colors. She was so faithful in visiting my Mom during her years of invalidism. Once when Mom expressed a desire for homemade apple pie (Which I didn't know how to make) Aunt Anne made one for her, and passed on the word to the rest of the family. In one week we had three. How sad that Aunt Anne too closed out her years with so many physical problems, until the Lord released her and promoted her to glory. Her verse on the marker describes her well: "Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory" (Psalm 73:24). [THE HERTEL FAMILY HERITAGE by Leona Hertel]

John W. Hertel II was born in 1948. He died 1, 2 on 16 May 1950 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA.

One day the whole family of aunts, uncles, and cousins gathered to bury little John W. Hertel, II who at the age of 22 months went to be with Jesus. His unexpected death from a kidney infection hurt deeply, since he was an only child. I remember talking with his mother later on. She said, “I’ve been reading everything I can find in the Bible about heaven, because I know our little boy is there." When Johnny's parents had the tombstone engraved with his name, date of birth and death, they included the words from John 15:19, BECAUSE I LIVE, YE SHALL LIVE ALSO. And thus was established a family tradition. [THE HERTEL FAMILY HERITAGE by Leona Hertel]

Dr. Glenn Richard van Noord [Parents] was born 1 on 6 Mar 1947. He died 2 on 15 Mar 1998 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, USA. He was buried on 20 Mar 1998 in Lake Forest Cemetery, Grand Haven, Michigan. Glenn married 3 Barb in 1973.

Glenn Van Noord was a family physician in Grand Rapids and a member of Thornapple Covenant Church from 1993 until 1998. He was raised in Battle Creek, MI, and attended Calvin College in the 1960s. After briefly considering going to seminary, he discovered a love for science, and wound up in medical school in Detroit. He lived in Detroit during the race riots in the early 1970s, and witnessed the very real effect poverty can have on a community.
As a Christian, he sought ways to put his faith into action. Glenn loved rooting for the "underdog," loved hearing people's stories, and loved using his gifts to improve the lives of others. As a physician, he was known to go above and beyond to provide care for his patients - giving rides, finding jobs, listening to worries, lending money... learning to say “no” was tough for him.
He liked the idea of continuing a legacy of his grandparents, who into their 80s volunteered at Degage Ministries in downtown Grand Rapids. He started a youth group trip each month to Degage, feeling it was important for his and other kids at Thornapple to be exposed to lifestyles and opinions and experiences which were different from their own. He also volunteered at the health clinic at Heartside in Grand Rapids' homeless community.
At age 51, his love for adventure and new experience brought him to Central America, where he died suddenly of a heart attack. His wife, Barb, and kids Dave and Kate, feel so blessed that the Glenn Van Noord scholarship combines some of the things that made Glenn who he was: new experiences, serving the poor, love for teenagers and the gospel. We hope that the scholarship is one way that Thornapple youth can become part of what God is doing in the world, to "bring good news to the poor... proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor" (Luke 4).
