Jane Ann (Jenny) was married rather late in life to John Burden of Clapham, at St. Judes Church, Brixton, London, on 7th September 1880. They lived in Hazelrig Road, Clapham for at least 30 years, then moved to Lea Road, Lewisham, before 1915. They then moved to a smaller house at Tunbridge Wells, Kent in the 1920s . He left 22,000 (pounds?) to a children's home and an annuity to his wife. They had no children. John Burden was a partner in an insurance firm, Fordhams, in the Caledonian Road, London. Family lore says with confidence that he had a common law wife and children whom he looked after during his life time ! We believe Jane knew about it but it was NEVER talked about in her presence. Jane was, apparently, very austere, strict and severe ! Interestingly, as a child, Jane was frightened by the one and only Victor Hugo who lived in Havre des Pas, St. Helier - because he wore a large, flat priest's hat ! The family took their own lanterns to church - quote of Jane as a child: "Je sens les mourts". (information from Margaret Terry, Renouf descendant, 17 Mar 1999)

Indexed as Julia in the 1871 census.

Philip Renouf was a sea pilot of the port of St. Helier - Captain, Number 2 pilot boat. A 'sea' expert - always giving advice as to safety - even when he was 90 years old, he was often giving advice out in the pilot boat! In his retirement, his morning walk was going down to the harbour.   He married Esther Nobbs on 25th October 1900.  They had one child, Eileen who married Charles D'Authreau and they in turn had two sons, Philip and David. Philip lives in England and David in Jersey. They have families, too - details on family tree! (David Terry knows of grandson, Philip d'Authreau.)

He was living in Jersey in 1899, as Charles A. Renouf wrote him there.

Anne was baptized 5 on 19 Sep 1847 in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. She was counted in a census 6 in 1881 in Lambeth, Surrey, England.

Anne married George Gallichan.  They had two children, Francis ('Dod')  and Florence ('Queenie') b. c 1870 Francis joined the French Foreign Legion - and escaped !  - also wrote a French History Book and is said to have lectured in France (?!) He was very clever - and smart - for he, too, investigated the family history, prior to the Great War.  He married a Nancy b.  1892 and had an only daughter, Marie c 1923 - 1946 who was mentally ill and institutionalised.   Florence never married. She taught piano to private pupils  at home, in St. Helier.  After Francis's death, Nancy moved back to her origins, the Potteries district of England. Incidentally, his opinion was that the de la Ville side of the family came from Alsace Lorraine. We tend to think it was the former, i.e. Strasburg.

George married Clara Benest, sister of Alice. Clara is reputed to have 'nagged' George - hence he went fishing a lot! He lost his life at sea while fishing with two companions in foul weather - he had been warned NOT to go out fishing that day by his older brother, Philip. Tragically, his body was washed up near Les Minquets [Les Minquiers -  a reef of rocks lying to the south of Jersey]  - rocks between Jersey and France - in his underpants but minus his boots! (information from Margaret Terry, Renouf descendant, 17 Mar 1999)

Marie was baptized 4 on 4 Nov 1855 in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands.

Marie Jane married George John Saint Bowyer (another fascinating story we are investigating!) and bought the shop belonging to Jesse Boot  (of Boots' Chemists  fame) on the corner of La Motte Street in St. Helier.  Marie Jane went to dancing classes in the 1870s with the future wife of Jesse Boot and with 'Lillie' le Breton, better known as Lillie Langtry, actress and lover of the Prince of Wales, later Edward V11. George John had a thriving interior design/decorating business. After his death in 1901, Marie Jane sold the business. Her mother Jane Renouf (nee Marett) left her 3 hotels/guest houses for Marie Jane's 3 boys and a sum of money for her daughter, but a bad/disastrous second marriage resulted in divorce and her coming to England with only a certain amount of money and no hotels! Her children were: Stanley, Otto (my grandad), Elmo and Muriel. (see family tree). Marie Jane reverted back to the surname Bowyer, by deed poll.  She lived at Acton, Haringey, Lewisham and East Finchley, London while Muriel was at private school.  She and Muriel then moved to near Reading where they took lodgers.  Muriel met her husband, Bill Taylor. they all moved to Iverna Court, Kensington, London (where I met them all as a very young child of 5/6) - Muriel became 'mom' to Bill's children, Margot and Reg (see family tree!)   Bill became a vicar, Margot a concert pianist and examiner and Reg in business - both have families.  I have a mother-of-pearl prayer book of Marie Jane's - beautiful!  Also, recipe books of hers and her mothers, written in copperplate handwriting. I will try a few of the recipes one of these days. (information from Margaret Terry, Renouf descendant, 17 Mar 1999)
