The 1901 census lists Gertrude with her mother in Burrard, British Columbia. Her religion is "Free Thinker".

On 17 September 1904 in "The Daily Province" newspaper of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada we find an engagement announcement for Gertrude Lucille to Mr. Ernest P. Boyce of Seattle. Announced by Mr. and Mrs Charles A. Renouf of Seattle formerly of Vancouver. The announcement is repeated on 24 September 1904 in"The Daily Province". The marriage likely did not occur as Gertrude Lucille is listed as single at her marriage to John Lamprecht. And also Ernest P. Boyce is listed as single at his marriage to Mary Grace Scott on 15 April 1911 in Seattle.

Listed as living in Seattle in the 13 September 1911 Certificate of Naturalization of her father, Charles Adolphus Renouf.

Where was she?

Gertrude had a number of marriages. She may have had a California gold claim as Gertrude Jorgensen.

Gertrude Lucille Renouf married Howard O. Holmes in 1922 but, apparently, did not take his name. In 1932, when she married Alfred Casse Jorgensen, she is "G. Lucille Butler" on her wedding certificate.

Charles Adolphus Renouf [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 on 22 Oct 1857 in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands, England. He was christened 8, 9 on 8 Nov 1857 in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands, England. He died 10, 11 on 18 Oct 1941 in Seattle, King County, Washington, USA. He was buried 12 on 3 Nov 1980 in Washelli Columbarium, Seattle, King County, Washington, USA. Charles married 13, 14, 15 Eliza Lucilla Ashjohn Clarke "Lucille E." on 31 May 1882 in Brixton, County Surrey, England.

Charles was baptized 16 on 8 Nov 1857 in St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. He was counted in a census 17 in 1881 in Lambeth, Surrey, England. He immigrated 18 on 20 Jun 1902 to Washington, USA. He was naturalized 19 on 6 Jun 1911 King County, Washington, USA. He worked as asst mngr White House Billiard Parlors; 12911 Laveview Ave in 1914 in Seattle, King County, Washington, USA.

In 1881 Charles A. Renouf is found in Lindon in the household of his sister Ann J. "Gallishaw".

From the 1892 extract of the 31 May 1882 marriage record we see Charles (Bachelor / Commercial Traveller) and Lucille (Spinster) both living at 100 Railton Road: Philip Renouf, pilot, is Charles' father; Henry Clarke, Gentleman, is Lucille's father. Witnesses P. C. Gallichan and A. Gallichan. The witnesses look like Philippe Charles GALLICHAN and his wife Ann Jane RENOUF, Charles Adolphus RENOUF’s brother-in-law and sister.

Living in St. Peter Port, Jersey in 1891 census.

Charles Aldolphus Renouf was born on Green Street, St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands, England; An 1896 "Extract from the Register of Births" is in the possesion of Audrey Donnel.

C A Renouf's 1899 diary states that he and Lucille went to Canada for their "honeymoon" (circa 1882). They returned to the Channel Islands in 1885. A 1938 document (Our Older Neighbors by Clara J. Tink) quotes him:

"We made our honeymoon to Winnegeg (sic) and witnessed the Riel Indian rebellion. After the Custer massacre, Sitting Bull escaped into northwestern- Canada where he aided and abetted the French halfbreed Indians who rose in rebellion against the government.

"In 1885 my wife and I left Winnepeg (sic) to return to the Island of Jersey. The last thing we saw in Winnepeg (sic) was Sitting Bull, seated on a wagon headed for Stony Mountain Penitentiary.

"We finally located on the Island of Guernsey, which is a island about half the size of Vashon Island, with a population of 35,000. There I entered the men's furnishings business but I later sold out to go into the hot-house business.

"In 1899 we again sold out and left for Vancouver, B. C. Here I was in business for two years, later going to Dawson and to the Island of Woedesky near Wrangel Narrows, where I traded with the Indians and was the buyer of mining, camp goods and cannery supplies. In 1904 we left Alaska and spent considerable time searching for a suitable location for a hot-house. After looking in the vicinity of Seattle and Lake Washington, I saw an ad in a newspaper which interested me, for I had three things in mind - water, wood, and waterfront. All these I found at the place which was to be our Vashon Island home. The piece of land was in the rough, timber all around and a little cowshed was the only building on the place. I started to build our home in 1905, and I also built 225 feet of greenhouses. These glass houses went down under the heavy snow in 1917. Part of them were rebuilt, but part we turned into chicken houses. We planted our pear tree hedge in 1908 and our grape vines in 1913. Life on Vashon Island has been good."

He left Guernsey for Vancouver BC in late August 1899. A diary of their jouney is in the possession of Nancy Knowlton. Diary talks of a C. E. Renouf, Victoria storekeeper, no relation (A C. E. RENOUF is later seen as part of the Alaska gold rush). In December 1899 his address was 1039 Nicola St; Vancouver, BC. Possible relatives: P C Renouf, Jersey (undoubtedly his brother); M T Renouf, Vauquiedor.

In September of 1901 there is a record of C. A. Renouf leaving Dawson City (RENOUF, C.A. SEP , 1901 1039 Nicholas, Vancouver, BC - http://www.gold-rush.org/cgi-bin/goldrush/search.cfm). Clary Craig, a post office worker in Dawson City, maintained a list of people leaving the Klondike by death or departure. Many of the almost 14,000 entries list forwarding addresses or destinations for those leaving the Klondike. The predominance of Nome, Alaska as one listed destination is consistent with other historical records documenting a mass exodus from Dawson to Nome in 1899. Like a giant nomadic tribe, thousands streamed toward Nome when rumours hit Dawson that there were flakes of gold in the sands of Nome's beaches. The family of C A Renouf is not recorded as accompanying him. Very likely, in 1901 he went to Port Alexander or Sitka Island, AK. There he is said to have run a supply store for gold prospectors, headed to the gold fields. They left Alaska in 1904 (possibly 1902, as census records record a 1902 immigration to the US).

They moved to Vashon Island in Washington state. In 1904 he bought land from A Thorsen. In 1905 he begain to build a home in Cove, WA. There he raised "hot-house" produce and, later (after a heavy snow destroyed the greenhouses in 1917), chickens along with produce.

Certificate of Naturalization, 13 September 1911. Superior court, King County, Washington. Lucille is listed as his wife. They were living in Cove, WA. Gertrude, age 26, of Seattle Wn is listed as a minor child.

"Charles A. Renouf, a cheery, talkative, ingenious, spunky character from the Isle of Guernsey, built a home patterned after stone mansions of his forebearers. He also built greenhouses. Renouf purchased the first horseless wagon to appear on the West Side. The late Roland Bradley and his wife Betty, now Mrs. Cliff Weidemann, bought the Renouf property" [Historical-Sometimes Hysterical-Rhymes of Vashon-Maury Island by Stanley, Marjorie Rose]

From the above information we tracked down the property. The property lines appear to be unchanged since 1905.

We have no information about Edward from any family member. He was a child of 3 years old living at the Renouf household in 1861 (census record).  He was also mentioned on the 1871 census.  We tend to wonder whether he was in fact a cousin rather than a member of the family as no-one seems to know him or anything about him !! An enigma. (information from Margaret Terry, Renouf descendant, 17 Mar 1999)

Lucille is recorded as Eliza Lusilla Ashjohn JOHN, daughter of Jane JOHN on a birth certificate found by Sue Mills (descendant of Minnie). No father is listed and it is suspected that Henry Clarke ASH (1826-1898) was Eliza Lusilla Ashjohn's father. This theory is supported by an Ancestry DNA link between Rebecca Ann (Donnel) Vermeer and descendants of Helen Maria ASH (born about 1823) Henry Clrake ASH's sister.

Eliza S A John in the 1861 England Census is listed as age 5/12 (5 months).

The 1871 UK census includes Lucille Clarke, aged 10, b. England, living in St Helier, Channel Islands.  Two other children are found at the same location (Freddy [William Alfred], 12, b. England ; Annie [Minnie], 5, b. England) All are lodgers at 32 Columbus Street, St Helier. The head of household was the widow BARLEY, a Lodging House Keeper. The only other inhabitant was a domestic servant. There is no sign of any Clarkes who might be their parents.

Other marriages:
Standen, Elizabeth Susannah
Taylor, Mary Sarah

Surname variously as: Ash, Clarke, and Clarke-Ash.
Henry Clarke ASH and Jane JOHN never married. Jane and her children assumed the surname of CLARKE around 1861. Further there seemed to be good relations between the ASH and CLARKE families - Minnie CLARKE named a son Reginald Charles and her "step-brothers" were Reginald and Charles ASH.

Henry is listed as the father of Bertha Ann (Clarke) Brett (26 Oct 1856 - 7 Feb 1926) on Bertha's death certificate.

Bertha's son, William H. Brett, is listed as nephew of Charles A Renouf and Lucille (Clarke) Renouf in the 1891 Guernsey census.

Listed as Henry CLARKE-ASH in grandma's papers and in the death record of his daughter, Lucille. "Grandma's papers" also list his age as 72½, but the dates listed calculate to 71½ - which *could* imply his birth as 16 Nov 1825 for which we'd have an exact match to Henry Clarke ASH, son of Henry and Helen ASH (pilot.familysearch.org).

In addition, "grandma's papers" list with Henry Clarke-Ash the following: Reginald Clarke ASH (b 2 Jan 1873), Florence Mary ASH (b 24 Feb), Mary Sarah ASH (b 5 Mar), Charles Henry ASH (b 21 May), and Harry ASH (b 6 Sep).

In June of 2010 we concluded Henry CLARKE (CLARKE-ASH) father of Lucille E. CLARKE (1860-1955) was the same person as Henry Clarke ASH (1825-1898) son of Henry and Helen. This is based on several things. 1. Henry's occupation is Ice Merchant in 1891 and 1892. 2. Audrey (KNOWLTON) DONNEL, gg-granddaughter confirms that Henry never married Jane JOHN. 3. Records maintained by Lucille RENOUF list the family of Henry Clarke ASH and her RENOUF lineage on the same page.

"Henry C." Age 68 in 1891 census, St Geo Hanover Sq, London, England and born Warwickshire Birmingham.

The Henry CLARKE-ASH noted in Lucille JORGENSEN's record indicates Henry was born 16 Nov 1826 and died 12 Jun 1898, but age 72 1/2, so I believe the birth date is off by a year as 1826 wiuld make him 71 1/2 at death.

Henry CLARKE ASH had a number of patents:
-PISTON FREEZING MACHINE AND ICE CO., 301 & 303 Oxford Street, W.—(1) Ash's Patent SelfFeeding Refrigerator. (2) Ash's Patent SelfFiltering Refrigerator. (3) Ordinary Box Refrigerators. (4) Ash's Kaffee-Kannes. (5) Ash's Patent Piston Freezing Machines, Filters, Electroplated Ice Jugs and Butter Coolers. (6) Norwegian Cooking Apparatus. (Class 11.) Jane John [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3, 4 about 1835 in County Dublin, Ireland. She died 1 on 25 Nov 1875 in Workhouse Infirmary, Chelsea, England from Phthisis Pulmonalis (Tuberculosis, "consumption"). Jane married Henry Clarke Ash 5.

The supposition that Jane John; who was born about 1835 in County Dublin, Ireland; was the daughter of Richard John and Martha Rowe is supported by an Ancestry DNA connection between Jane's descendant, Audrey Elaine (Knowlton) Donnel and a Kerri Savva. Kerri Savva is a descendant of Jane John's Mother, Martha Rowe (1805-1847).

DNA results on Ancestry DNA also support that Jane John was the granddaughter of James John and Elizabeth Anear. On Ancestry we find a DNA link between Audrey Elaine (Knowlton) Donnel and Barry Gibbons, born about 1934 and living in Reading (UK). Barry Gibbons is a documented descendant of James John and Elizabeth Anear through their daughter, Louisa Virginia John who was baptized 5 Sep 1823 in Truro, Cornwall, England.

Jane John's father Richard was born 29 Apr 1805 and baptized 19 May 1805 in Truro, Cornwall, England. On 5 Mar 1826, in Cornwall, he married Martha Rowe. Richard and Martha had a daughter, Elizabeth Susan, baptized 14 Jan 1829 in London. Daughter Martha Rowe John was baptized 12 Dec 1830 in London. Their son Richard James John was baptized 19 May 1833 in Truro, Cornwall, England. No birth record for Jane John has been found but most census records state that she was born about 1835 in Dublin, Ireland. Their son Charles John was born 14 May 1843 and was baptized 7 Dec 1843 in Southwark, London, England.

In the 1841 UK Census Jane John (age 7 born Ireland) is found in St Saviour's Southwark, Surrey, England (South of London). In this record we see her with her father Richard John (1805-1850) of correct age but born Ireland (not Cornwall). This appears to be the family of Richard John (1805-1850) and Martha Rowe (1805-1847); both Richard and Martha died in Southwark, England. And for the 1851 census both Jane John and her brother, Richard James John, are found in Truro, Cornwall, England.

Jane's mother, Martha (Rowe) John, died in 1847 and was buried 22 Oct 1847 in Southwark, England.

Jane John's father, Richard John, died in 1850 and was also buried 11 Jan 1850 in Southwark.

In the UK 1851 census Jane is found living with her aunts [sisters to Richard John (1805-1850)]. Jane's birthplace is Dublin, Ireland and her age is 16 years. They are in Truro, Cornwall, England. We see Jane's aunt, Louisa (age 27), Jane's aunt, Elizabeth (age 33). Also Louisa's niece and nephew, Elizabeth and John Gibson (children of Jane's aunt, Roxanna John, and William Gibson).

Jane, again born in Dublin, is found in Kensington in the 1861 census with children: Bertha C John (age 4), William A John (age 2) and Eliza L A John (5 months). Of note, "Eliza L A John" is Rebecca Ann (Donnel) Vermeer's 2nd-great-grandmother; "Eliza Lucilla Ashjohn" on her birth record and "Lucille E. Clarke" in most of her later life. Jane's older siblings Bertha Ann and William Alfred both seemed to be given the surname Clarke at birth, so we might assume that Eliza Lucilla had the surname Ashjohn (although this never appears in other records).

Living in Kennington, Surrey on birth record of daughter, Minnie (1864). Here she is 'Jane Clarke formerly John', indicating a possible marriage to Henry Clarke who is listed as Minnie's father. Jane is found in Sloane Square, Chelsea with daughter, Bertha, in 1871 census. Her surname here is Clarke, too. She is Jane Clarke on her death record as well. A marriage between Jane and Henry Clarke has not been found and they are never found together in any census so it is suspected they never actually married.

Lucille E. Clarke (Eliza Lucilla Ashjohn) kept a record of birth dates and Rebecca Ann (Donnel) Vermeer's family has a copy of it. There is a "Henry Clarke-Ash recorded in this record and in the Washington State deaths record of Lucille. This record, "Grandma's papers", Henry Clarke-Ash has a birth day of 16 Nov 1826 and a death date of 12 Jun 1898 with age at death as 72½ Yr. Except for birth year (1926 not 1925) this exactly matches records we've found for Henry Clark Ash (16 Nov 1825 -  12 Jun 1898) son of Henry Ash and Helen Morris – even the age at death matches!

In addition, "grandma's papers" list with Henry Clarke-Ash the following: Reginald Clarke Ash (b 2 Jan 1873), Florence Mary Ash (b 24 Feb), Mary Sarah Ash (b 5 Mar), Charles Henry Ash (b 21 May), and Harry Ash (b 6 Sep). This is the family of Henry Clarke Ash (1825-1898) from his two documented marriages.

From all of this we conclude that Henry Clarke (Clarke-Ash) father of Lucille E.

Bakersfield Californian. Thursday December 17, 1908. "Fresno Minister Takes His Life":

"REEDLEY, Dec. 27. Kneeling before a washbasin in a position which he had assumed hundreds of times in making prayer, Rev G. W. Donnel, a Baptist Minister of Reedley, yesterday afternoon about 12:30 sent a bullet crashing into his brain from the muzzle of a .22 caliber rifle. He had been suffering for some time from nervous prostration, and it is believed that he was insane at the time of the self-destructive deed.

"He had shown signs of suicidal mania for some time past, and the signs have been recognized by his wife. He had been in bed for some weeks past and has not in a year had a regular charge as pastor of a church. Day before yesterday he asked to have a notary public come out to the family residence, which is a mile from Reedley, as he wished to have his property deeded to his wife, but this was not done and the shot was fired yesterday without the deed having been made.

"Yesterday, shortly after noon, he went into the bath room of his house and his wife, feeling uneasy about him, tried to enter the room, but found the door locked. She became very uneasy and forced an entrance through a door from another room. she found her husband lying on the floor before a bureau, in a pool of blood, unconscious."

From "Portrait & Biographical Record of Montgomery & Bond Counties, IL" Cahpman Bros. Chicago Ill   1892:

"WILLIAM L. DONNEL, Sr. one of the most prominent and intelligent gentlemen residing in Shelby County, who is thoroughly public-spirited and capable of being a leader of thought and action in his township, resides on section 21, Ridge Township.  His father was John M. Donnel, a native of Tennessee, as was also his mother, Elizabeth Jerregan.  After marriage this couple settled in Rutherford County, Tenn., and thence emigrated to Montgomery County, Ill., about the year 1827.  They afterward made their home in Vandalia, this State, where the life of Mrs. Donnel terminated near that place.  Her husband who survived her, died in Williamson County, this State.

"He of whom we write was the eldest in a family of twelve children, and was bom in Rutherford County, Tenn., January 22, 1820; he came to Illinois with his father who was in limited circumstances and in order to assist his parents he worked out when he was a boy doing farm labor. During the winter of 1839-40 he moved the goods and press of the editor of the State Register with whom he had pleasant relations, as the older man appreciated the bright qualities of the boy.  In March, 1840, he came to Shelby County, Ill., and engaged in farming upon his own account in Ridge Township.  In June, 1846, he settled on section 21 of the latter township where he has since been a resident.

"Mr. William Donnel was married January 6, 1842, to Miss Mary Ann Roys, a daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Roys) Roys, both natives of Kentucky. Daniel Roys passed away from life in Ridge Township, but his widow still survives him and is now at the advanced age of eighty-seven years and makes her home with our subject.  Mrs. Donnel was bom in Rush County, Ind., April 13, 1825.  Mr. and Mrs. Donnel have had eleven bright and interesting children three of whom died in infancy.  The surviving children are: Elizabeth J., the wife of John H. McDonald; Mary Ann, who married J. J. Himes; Sarah H., the wife of Charles Small; William L. Jr., who took to wife Miss Nettie Busby; George W., a clergyman of the Missionary Baptist Church in Oregon, whose wife bore the maiden name of Elizabeth Neal; James W., who married Sarah Killam; Charles H. and Dora E. are at home.

"Our subject has held the office of School Trustee for seventeen years and during that time has been very efficient in forwarding the educational interests of the township.  He has also taken an active part in political affairs, casting his first Presidential vote for James K. Polk and being a worker in the Democratic ranks.  In his religious connection he was formerly identified with the United Baptist Church but is now a member of the Christian Church.  He has always been engaged in farming and stock raising and has erected upon his farm a first-class set of buildings and has two hundred acres in fine shape.  He is a man keenly alive to the necessity for progress in the affairs of the neighborhood both social and industrial, and is truly appreciative of all good things whether intellectual or material."
