Antiques, adventure drew Marie Edwards to world art centers

by Carole Beers Seattle Times staff reporter

Marie Farman Edwards, who for 20 years bought and sold antiques for the Old World Shop in Seattle's Frederick & Nelson department store, was a true citizen of the world.

In her travels as a buyer, and later as an interior designer, the petite redhead, whose family founded Farman's Pickles, moved easily in the fine homes, shops and galleries of Paris, London and Tokyo.

Wearing the latest suit or dress, she entertained artists and clients in restaurants or in her home.

"She had quite an adventuresome life," said her stepson Glenn Edwards of Yarrow Point.

"She traveled all over when she was with Frederick's, then when she married my dad. He was in construction, and she went off on her own to do interior designing. She went to art openings or the Design Center, and was on the go until a few months ago."

Mrs. Edwards died Wednesday (Nov. 17) of cancer. She was 90.

Born in Missouri, she moved with her family to Bainbridge Island, then to Kent, where she graduated from high school.

After a brief first marriage, she became a saleswoman at Frederick & Nelson in Seattle. She learned about antique lamps, silver, paintings and credenzas, and moved up to buyer for the Old World Shop.

In the 1950s, she traveled long hours in propeller-driven aircraft. She shopped the world with a sharp eye and even sharper pencil. She became an expert on history as reflected in objets d'art. She also collected jewelry and paintings.

When she went out on her own as a designer, she drew on her customer list. She oversaw architect Ralph Anderson's design of her home on Queen Anne Hill. She appraised the entire contents of homes in Seattle's Highlands.

"If someone wanted a super contemporary interior, she could do it," said her stepson's wife, Janet Edwards. "But her specialty was antique furniture. Her home was full of it, although she thought nothing of selling off something. Her husband never knew what would be there, or not, when he got home."

Mrs. Edward's second husband, Haakon Edwards, whom she married in 1958, died in 1990.

Aside from her design and furnishings-appraisal work, she was active in the Summit Club for Swedish Medical Center. She recently earned the Elmer J. Nordstrom award for work on behalf of Swedish.

She loved to throw intimate cocktail parties. She always had piano music playing in the background.

"She had her favorite restaurants, but whenever a new one opened, she had to try it," said Janet Edwards. "When she took us out we complained, `We wish you were cooking.' She did chicken, roast beef with gravy, that kind of thing. She was a fabulous cook."

Also surviving are her stepson Robert Edwards of Kent; her brothers Herbert Farman of Bremerton and Richard Farman of Seattle; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

No services are planned. Donations may go to Swedish Medical Center / First Hill Foundation or Tumor Institute, 747 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122.
