DANIEL ROBBINS, the first of the Robbins name to settle in Winthrop, Maine, was born in Dedham, August 17, 1722, in that part of the town that, two years later, was set off and became Walpole. He was a son of William Robbins, Jr., who was born in Reading, Mass., in 1681, who died in Walpole,

January 7, 1769, and his wife, Hannah (Clap), born March 28, 1679, and died May 10, 1761, whom he married in 1703; and was a grandson of William Robbins, and his wife, Priscilla, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Brock) Gowing, whom he married in January, 1680, who were of Scotch ancestry. She died in Walpole, March 5, 1745 ; and was probably born in Reading. The ancestry or birthplace of William Robbins has not yet been ascertained. He died in Walpole, August 18, 1725. The first record of him is that he, with others from Reading, and those from other towns in the eastern part of Massachusetts Bay Colony, took part in the movement against the treacherous Nipmuck Indians, in the vicinity of what is now Webster, Mass., and the Lakes near the line of Connecticut and Rhode Island, in King Philips War. The participants were, by the General Court, given a township or tract of land eight miles square. He was included in this land grant, as appears in a history of Reading, and records in the Archives of Massachusetts. He located at " Lyn-end," now Lynn field, and subsequently removed to Dedham, in the " Mill Divident," which later became Walpole.

"Mr Thomas Clap was born in Dorchester, England, 1597. He came to New England with the early settlers of Dorchester, where his brothers John, Richard and Ambrose tarried. Thomas proceeded to Weymouth, where his first son Thomas was born 1639. He had grants of land in Hingham, 1637, but never resided there. His farm in Weymouth was near the present residence of Hon. Christopher Webb. He came to Scituate 1740. We find no record of his children born here, but we learn from incidental records, that he had Eleazer, Samuel, Elizabeth, Prudence, John born 1658, and Abigail born 1659. His farm in Scituate was on the south-west of Stockbridge's mill pond, and now owned by Calvin Jenkins, sen. He was a Deacon of the first Church 1647. He was an active, useful, and venerable man." [Samuel Deane, History of Scituate, Massachusetts]

"Thomas Clapp. Son of Richard Clapp, of England, and cousin of Roger and Edward, was born in Dorchester, England, in 1597. He came over to this country, probably, ... in the ship which arrived from Weymoutn (Eng.) on the 24th of July, 1633. The probability is that Thomas and Nicholas, and their cousin Edward, came over together, and John some time afterward. The name of Thomas Clapp appears, in 1634, on the Town Records of Dorchester, where his brothers Nicholas and John settled, lived and died. After his arrival in this country, Thomas remaind a few years in Dorchester, being admitted as a freeman there in 1638, and then removed to Weymouth, Mass., probably with the intention of settling there. His farm was near what has since been the residence of Hon. Christopher Webb, of that place. "Farmer, in his Genealogical Register, says that Thomas, senior, removed from Waymouth to Hingham, and thence to Scituate; while Deane says he had grands of land in Hingham, but never resided there. Whether he did remove there or not, there is little doubt that it was his intention to do so when the grant of lands was made to him. If he was an inhabitant of Scituate as early as 1640, as Deane says, it is very unlikely that he ever took up his residence in Hingham, as there is evidence of ihs being in Weymouth the year pervious. He was Deacon of the Church in Scituate in 1647, and was warmly engaged in a theological controversy respecting the form of baptism, which commenced about 1641, with the Rev. Charles Chauncey, then minister in Scituate, but afterwards President of Harvard College. Mr. Clapp was one of the committee of three, in 1675, who sent a letter to the Second Church, informing them that a reconciliation had taken place after a controversy of 33 years. Mr. Clapp was a Deputy to the Court in 1649, and overseer of the poor in 1667, that being the first year such officers were chosen. He was a useful and enterprising man. He died April 20, 1684, greatly respected. His farm in Scituate was on the south-west of Stockbridge's mill-pond, and afterwards owned by Calvin Jenkins. Who his wife was had not been ascertained, excepting that her christian name was Abigail. "Richard Sylvester, who lived in Weymouth about 1640, held doctrines too liberal for the age in which he lived; they were supposed to be similar to those of his minister, Mr. Lenthial, whose doctrine was 'that all baptized persons should be admitted to the church without further trial.' This Mr. Lenthial afterward retracted before the General Court of Massachusetts; but Sylvester refusing, he was disfranchised, and therefore removed into Scituate, then in the Plymouth Colony and out of their jurisdiction. As Thomas Rawlins, Thomas Clapp, James Torrey and William Holbrook went to Scituate about the same time, Deane supposed it was on account of holding similar opinions." [Clapp Memorial]

Richard Clap [Parents] 1 was born 2 in 1570 in Sydbury, Devon, England. He died 2 on 24/24 Mar 1630/1631 in County Devon, England. Richard married Elizabeth.

So far as is known all of the surname Clapp who immigrated to America came in the early part of the seventeenth century, and there is an authentic account of six who did so come ; and of these five were among the earliest settlers of New England, landing at Dorchester from 1630 to 1640. The sixth landed at a later date on the southern Atlantic coast. Of the parentage of those who settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts, all that appears to be known centered in two of them, Richard Clapp and his brother, who lived in Salcombe. a small town near the west coast of England, twelve miles from Exeter. Several of the children of these brothers left their native country with those earnestly religious men who themselves oppressed by the domination of the established church and desired a field where they might feel themselves free of unfavorable religious surroundings ; and as they all were in comfortable circumstances in England there could have been no inducement but one of principle to tempt them to choose a wilderness region for their future homes. [Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and ... By William Richard Cutter pg952]

John Clap was born 1 in Salcombe, England. He died 1 on 24 Jul 1655 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

"John emegrated to New England during or soon after the year 1637. He lived all his life in Dorchester, and died there. His wife, Joan, after John's death, married John Ellis of Medfield. John and Joan had no children. The town of Dorchester had reason to remember him with gratitude, as he left land to the town lying at the Neck (now South Boston). For more than 150 years this land brought but little income to the town, but in the year 1835 it was sold for $1000 per acre. The number of acres was between thirteen and fourteen, and the land was situated in close proximity to that connected with the House of Correction and other city institutions. "John married Joan." [Clapp Memorial]

Increase Clap [Parents] was born 1, 2 in May 1640 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. He died 2 after 1710 in Rochester, Massachusetts. Increase married 1 Elizabeth Goodspeed Bursley 1 in Oct 1675.

Increase was baptized 1 on 14 May 1640 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

"Concerning his history, little is known. I am persuaded that he was the Increase that was baptized in Dorchester May 14 1640; that was probably about the period that his father removed from Weymouth to Scituate, and the controversy concerning Mr. Lenthial, the minister of Weymouth, was probably the cause of his bringing his son to Dorchester, his former place of residence, to be baptized by Ref. Richard Mather. He removed to Barnstable, Mass., and married the widow of Nathaniel Goodspeed in October, 1675. Her maiden name was Elizabeth, daughter of John Bursley. Increase went to Barnstable aobut 1661-2, and bought the estate of the Rowleys He probably removed to Rochester, Mass., the latter part of his life. I find in the Plymouth Records he was of Rochester in 1710, and bought twenty acres of land of William Griffiths, one of the original lots granted to William Clark (Lot 11)." [Clapp memorial]

Elizabeth Goodspeed Bursley [Parents] 1. Elizabeth married 1 Increase Clap in Oct 1675.
