THOMAS BIRD was born in England about the year 1613, in the reign of James the First. As to the time of his arrival in this country we are not informed. He joined the church in Dorchester in 1642, after its reorganization under the distinguished Rev. Richard Mather. He was made a bailiff in 1654, and was by occupation a tanner. He lived on what is now called Humphreys street. His tan-yard was on the ground nearly opposite, a little to the north-east, of the present residence of Thomas Groom, Esq., where a few years ago the yard and pits might have been seen. Jonas Humphreys and his son James were also tanners and near neighbors to Mr. Bird, owning and occupying land at the south end of the above named street. Among his cotemporaries in the same respectable and lucrative business, in the town, were John Glover, John Gornhill and others, as also Jeremy Houchin and Henry Bridgham, of Boston, who were formerly of Dorchester.

Thomas Bird died June 8,1667, aged 54. His will was proved July 17, 1667. The inventory of his estate, taken by John Capen, Sen. and Jasper Rush, amounted to the large sum in those times, of about one thousand pounds. His widow, Ann, died Aug. 21, 1673. Dea. Richard Williams [Parents] was born 1, 2 before 28 Jan 1607 in Wotton-under-Edge, Glouchestershire, England. He was christened 3 on 28 Jan 1606 in Parish of St. Mary the Virgin, Wotton-Under-Edge. He died 4 about 1693. Richard married 1, 2, 5 Frances Deighton 3 on 11 Feb 1632 in Parish of Witcombe Magna, Glouchestershire, England.

Of the change of his name by Sir Richard Williams, Gov. Williams said :

"Oliver Cromwell was a lineal descendant in the male line of Morgan Williams of Glamorganshire. His great grandfather, Sir Richard Williams, assumed the name of " Cromwell," it is true, but not until in mature years he had distinguished himself in the public service (temp. Henry VIII.), under the patronage of his uncle, Thomas Cromwell (Vicar General, 1535), whom he proposed to honor by the adoption of his name. In fact, ever afterwards, Sir Richard used to sign himself ' Richard Cromwell, alias Williams'; and his sons and grandsons, and Oliver himself, in his youth (1620), used to sign in the same manner. In important grants from the crown to Sir Richard (29 and 31, Henry VIII.) the grantee's name appears in both forms, ' Cromwell alias Williams ' and ' Williams alias Cromwell.'"

It is not believed that, in the light of Gov. Williams's researches, the relationship of Richard Williams of Taunton, and the Cromwell family, will again be questioned. [The New England Historical and Genealogical Register By Henry Fritz-Gilbert Waters]

Frances Deighton [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3 before 1 Mar 1611 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. Richard Williams on 11 Feb 1632 in Parish of Witcombe Magna, Glouchestershire, England.

ln passing, we note that Gov. Williams has discovered the parentage and family of the fair bride, whose memory has been worthily honored by giving her name to one of the towns that made part of " Ancient Taunton," and of her sister Katherine, the wife of Gov. Dudley—a problem that has heretofore baffled all the efforts of genealogists and antiquarians. They were the daughters of John Dighton, an eminent surgeon, and his wife, Jane, daughter of Edward Bassett of Uley. The Bassetts were descendants of the Berkeleys of Gloucestershire, so that in the old limits of Taunton we have two towns bearing the name of the wife of Richard Williams and of the famous family from which she was descended. We have not yet the precise date of her birth, but she was baptized in the church of St. Nicholas, Gloucester, March i, 1611 (O. S.) She survived her husband and all but two of her nine children, dying early in 1706, at the great age of ninety-five years. She was universally honored and beloved during her long life, and as a testimonial of the regard in which she was held, six years after her death, and in the centennial anniversary year of her birth, a part of the town of her adoption and in which she had dwelt more than the three score and ten years usually allotted as the limit of human life, was created a new town and named "Dighton" in her honor. l speak of her "in passing:" but when we consider the influences that must have gone out from Referring to the letter of Gov. Williams (the information in which he has kindly communicated to me,) we find that " Richard Williams of the parish of St. Johns in Gloucester and Frances Dighton of the parish of St. Nicholas in Gloucester were married in the parish of Whiteomb Magna, February n, 1632 (O. S.) the life of so good a woman, who is entitled to more honorable mention, when "the First Settlers of Taunton" are eulogized, than Frances Dighton Williams?
