In the 1900 Minnealpolis census we find: Daniel W Knowlton born June 1830 in Mass., age 69, living in Minneapolis at 1827 or 9 Park Ave.

EXTRACTED FROM: History of Minneapolis, Gateway to the Northwest; Chicago-Minneapolis, The S J Clarke Publishing Co, 1923; Edited by: Rev. Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical; Vol III, pg 652-655:

"David W. Knowlton, secretary of the Scottish Rite bodies of Masonry, is also an able attorney, and for nearly four decades has engaged in the practice of law in Minneapolis. He is a native of New England, his birth having occurred at Worcester, Massachusetts, on the 4th of July, 1862. His parents. Daniel Waldo and Mary E. (Clapp) Knowlton, were born at Holden, that state. The father devoted his attention to mercantile pursuits and in 1888 came to Minneapolis, where he continued to make his home until his demise.

"His son, David Waldo Knowlton, attended the grammar and high schools of Worcester, Massachusetts, and later became a student at Colby University at Waterville, Maine, from which he won the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1883, being graduated on the twenty-first anniversary of his birth. In October of that year he came to Minneapolis and since his admission to the bar he has successfully followed his profession in this city. He conducts his law practice with ability, carefully preparing his cases and presenting them with clearness and force. The court records are proof of his power as a lawyer, indicating that he has been connected with much important litigation.

"Mr. Knowlton's identification with the Masonic order forms one of the vital interests of his life. His connection with the order dates from June, 1894, and he has taken all of the degrees, including the thirty-third, which was conferred upon him on the 26th of December, 1903, in recognition of his services to the order. For twenty-two years he was secretary of Khurum Lodge, No. 112, F. & A. M., and for twenty-one years he was grand treasurer of the Grand Lodge. He was master of the blue lodge for two years and has held minor offices in the Scottish Rite, while he has also been potentate of Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine. In March, 1900, he was elected secretary of the Scottish Rite bodies, which office he has since held, and he is also a director of the Scottish Rite Cathedral and Masonic Temple associations and chairman of the Board of Custodians.

"On the 5th of October, 1901, Mr. Knowlton was married to Miss Ellen E. Bugby of Minneapolis, and they have become the parents of two sons, of whom the younger is David W. Knowlton, Jr. Alexander Knowlton, the firstborn, enlisted in the United States navy during the World war and was sent overseas just before the signing of the armistice.

"For twelve years Mr. Knowlton was a member of the Minnesota National Guard, serving first as captain of Company I and later as inspector general on the brigade staff. He has also been called to public office and is now acting as justice of the peace at Tonka, situated on Lake Minnetonka, in Hennepin county. He is deeply interested in the development and progress of the city in which he has made his home for forty years, and exemplifies in his life all that is admirable in conduct and character, being a man whom to know is to respect and admire."

Ellen Ermina Bugbee 1, 2 was born 3 on 3 Mar 1868 in Iowa. She died 4 on 28 Oct 1949 in Santa Barbara, California. She was buried 5 in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California, USA. Ellen married David W. Knowlton 2 on 5 Oct 1901.

She does not appear with David W. Knowlton the the 1900 MN census. They must have been married after that.

#914 in Stocking's Knowlton genealogy.

"Holden, MA vital records list parents as Daniel and Elizabeth. Gen. Reg of Framingham lists Elias and Elizabeth.

"And then you have the entry in the Holden vital records of Daniel son of Daniel and Elizabeth b. 17 Jan. 1780 in Framingham... I think that it is a typo or someone read it wrong... but my best guess would be that this was Elias and Elizabeth...

"And then in the History of Framingham it gives children: Jesse and Luther also... and they are in the vitals as far as marriages, etc.

"It might be a good idea to see if there is any probate for Elias Knowlton... but I do feel very good that Daniel born 17 Jan. 1780 is indeed the son of Elias and Elizabeth." [Marilyn Labbe]

In the Genealogical Register of Framingham Families by Temple it says Elias Knowlton, son of Daniel (1), lived in Framingham, and in Holliston, where he died abt 1787.  He married Elizabeth Jennings of Holliston.

Stocking's Knowlton genealogy, #398.

ELIAS KNOWLTON, brother of John K., 2d; settled on lot 15, range 7 ; m. Jennings, sister of John K.'s wife. Nathan K., another brother, m. a sister of the preceding, and lived on lot 15, range 6, but of his family, nothing is known to us. [The History of Dublin, NH on books.google.com]

Elias Knowlton's 1784 probate file is #13462, 1st series, at the MA Archives. Elias did die in Holliston. Nothing for Elizabeth Knowlton.

Elias was b. Framingham ca 1744 son of Daniel and Abigail (Almy) Knowlton. Daniel was taxed in Framingham 1744 and 1765; also lived Holliston and Hopkinton where most of his children were born; died abt 1782 age 65. Married 17 Feb. 1743 Abigail Almy, b. Hopkinton, then of Framingham.

Elizabeth Jennings [Parents] was born 1, 2 on 16/16 Mar 1745/1746 in Holliston, Middlesex County, Mass. Elizabeth married 3 Elias Knowlton about 1764 in Holliston, Middlesex County, Mass.

Jennings, Elisabeth (Elisabeth, d. Daniel and Elisabeth, Mar. 16, 1745-6.) of Holliston. This from the "Affidavit of Luther Knowlton" found in Report to the Jennings Association, U.S.A. Rutland, Vt.?: Jennings Association, 1863, pg 22.

"Luther Knowlton of Wolpole, county of Cheshire, and State of New Hamphire, of lawful age, depose and say that I am now seventy-eight years ole, that my mother was Elizabeth Jennings, daughter of Daniel Jennings of Holliston, Massachusetts. ..." sworn 20 Dec 1851

Genealogies published for the Jennings Association and in the "History of Framingham" seem to erroneously name Elisabeth Jennings as Sussanah same birth date as the Elisabeth found in Holliston Vital Records. Note also that a daughter Susannah, born 30 Dec 1743, was alive at the time of Elisabeth's birth. Further, Luther Knowton attests to her lineage in a sworn affadavit on 30 Dec 1851 and Elias Knowlton was a member of the Jennings Association [whose purpose was to claim the fortunes of William Jennings (1701-1798) of England].
