Donald Duwayne Gilder, age 83 of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully on June 1st, 2013 at the Harbor Hospice House with loved ones by his side. Don was born on July 1, 1929 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Wilma (Goosen) Gilder and Jack (John) Gilder. Graduating from Central High in Grand Rapids he went on to receive a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education from Western Michigan University. Don was a US army veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1957. Upon returning, he taught in East Grand Rapids, then at Muskegon Public Schools and then became principal at Churchill Henry for 20 yrs. He liked working with children because he was a big kid himself! In his free time , Don loved refereeing football, basketball and baseball for over 45 years. Frequently he was known to transport his crews to the games in his hearse decked out in red shag carpet!! After retiring from the school system, his time was devoted to being a landlord. He also enjoyed playing golf, cribbage, traveling and especially interacting with people from all over the world. A dog by his side and feeding ducks and squirrels would always put a smile on his face. Don was a unique character with a big heart, having many stories and jokes to share. He truly lived a very full life and did it his way! He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife Marthene (Kuieck) Gilder; and son Eric Gregory Gilder. Survived by his daughter Tammy Lynn Gilder; his beloved significant other of 36 years Carol Ann Priebe; and his special canine buddy Felix Unger. There will be a celebration of Don's life on July 28 at the Jaycee Clubhouse in Grand Haven from 2-5pm. Please bring stories to share!
