Tjeert was born in Hornhuizen on December 1, 1886. He went to be a major organizer of the farm labor union in Groningen and ultimately became a member of the Provincial board. He resisted the Nazi’s and was arrested in 1943 by the Gestapo and was killed December 18, 1944 in Mauthausen Concentration Camp. He was recognized as a Hero of Netherlands by the Queen after the war. His name is prominently memorialized in the Provincial House in the City of Groningen.

From the best information obtainable, the parents of John Peden refugeed from Scotland to the Xortli of Ireland during the time of the religious persecution in the former country. He and his family came to the United States, first landing in Pennsylvania, settling in Bucks and Chester counties; just how long they remained there we cannot say. About the year 1768 he (John) removed to the Spartan District, South Carolina, settling near Nazareth church, in what is now Spartanburg County.

They had ten children. Sons—James, Thomas, William, John, Samuel, Alexander and David. Daughters—Hilary, who married James Alexander, Sr.,; Jane, who married Morton, after whose death she married Samuel Morrow; Elizabeth, who married William Gaston. (The latter left no children.)
