LORAIN COUNTY RESEARCHER Winter 1995 Vol. 12 , Issue 1 Page 9-10 "Joseph Moore-Avon's Revolutionary War Veteran"
Text: The only veteran of the Revolutionary War buried in Avon Lake or Avon is Joseph Moor ( also spelled More and Moore) an early settler along the lake shore. His early life is not well known, but from his pension application we learn that he was born in Southwick ( then Westfield), Hampden County, Ma, in 1764. At the age of 17 Joseph went to West Point and enlisted in the Rev. Army for three years. He was assigned to the Captain Amos Cogswell's Co. in the Third Regiment of the MA line. He served for almost the full term of his enlistment, being discharged at West Point on 17 Dec 1783. Some time in 1784 or 1785 Joseph Moor married Hannah Miller and they began their married life probably in Hampshire Co., at least five or six of their eleven children gave MA as their birthplace. The family then moved to upper NY state where Joseph made his first pension application from Willsborough, Essex Co., in 1818. His two oldest sons, Theron and Norman, Had left for Ohio in 1817, and had settled at what became Avon twonship in Lorain Co., and Joseph followed with the rest of the family in 1819. The first land purchases were probably recorded in Cleveland as that part of Lorain Co. was attached to Cuyahoga Co. until 1822, and deeds here do not begin until 1824. On 15 March 1830 Norman and Joseph More bought a tract in Avon Twp. Lot 18 at the Lake Erie due north of the eighteen mile tree on the road laid in the year 1810 from Cleveland, thence westerly along the Lake shore, thence running south from said Lake one mile, thence east fifty rods, thence north to the shore of Lake Erie and said lines to be parallel. This property lay on the east side of the present Avon-Belden Road being a strip 825 feet wide and one mile long. The next year they sold the tract to Levi Moore (son and brother) for $400. Joseph and Hannah (Miller) Moore raised eleven children and left something over 72 grandchildren. Chapter member Frank A. Nesbit, a descendant, has compiled what is known. The names of his children:Theron, Hannah, Norman, Joseph, Abigail, Sophia, Seth, Tirza, Ransom, Levi and Macena.
