MELVIN B. STARKEL "Mel" February 19, 1914 - July 4, 2005
Mel was born on February 19, 1914, in Fresno, CA, to John and Anna Starkel and passed away at the age of 91 in his home with his family by his side on Monday, July 4, 2005, in Fresno, CA. Mel was always full of optimism and thoroughly enjoyed life. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1932, and was a member of Roosevelt's first football team. He maintained his passion for sports, especially football, throughout his life. Upon completion of business college, he was employed in the automotive industry with his father. He proudly served his country in the European Theatre during World War II. Upon his discharge, he established Home Owners Supply Co., a roofing, insulation, and supply company. He later became a real estate broker and retired from Pearson Realty at the age of 84. He was a charter member and past president of the North Fresno Ex- change Club. He was also an honorary member and past Exalted Ruler of the Fresno Elks Lodge. He invested many years and a great deal of pride in the Elk's major project, helping handicapped children. After retirement, he served as a blood bank volunteer, chauffeured cancer patients, and was also a Fresno Zoo volunteer. The family wishes to convey our gratitude to St. Agnes Hospice for their profound humanitarianism. Additionally we extend tremendous appreciation to the management and staff of PCA Healthcare, Interim Healthcare, and a very special note of thanks to Nancy Kimura for all of her loving care. Mel was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ted. He is survived by Mary, his devoted wife of 63 years; his son, Ted Starkel and his wife Dee Dee Pricola of Fresno, CA; and two grandchildren, David Starkel of Fresno, and Andrea Starkel-Smith and her husband Bill of Pacifica, CA. No services will be conducted per Mel's request. We tremendously thank friends for their caring hearts and prayers. May your remembrances of Mel be as joy filled as were his remembrances of you.
